New Coach Amorim Challenges Manchester United’s Identity: A Confusing and Fearful Draw Against Ipswich!

Ruben Amorim acknowledged that Manchester United appeared “confused” and “afraid” during his first match in charge, which ended in a disappointing 1-1 draw against struggling Ipswich on Sunday. Amorim’s debut in the Premier League began with Marcus Rashford scoring an early goal just two minutes into the game.

Omari Hutchinson’s deflected strike brought Ipswich level before halftime, denying Amorim a debut victory after he replaced the sacked Erik ten Hag. Amorim has come from Sporting Lisbon to find a team in turmoil, currently sitting in 12th place in the Premier League.

Impressed by Work Rate but Acknowledges Flaws

While he was impressed by United’s work rate against third-bottom Ipswich, he acknowledged that there were numerous flaws to address.

“It is a tough league. My players were thinking too much during the game. You can feel it—not just in their ball handling but also in their positioning on the pitch,” he said. “We lost some possession. When you start the game with an early goal, you need to control the tempo, which we currently struggle to do, but the players really tried.

“You have to maintain possession and understand the momentum of the game. We’re making some decisions at the wrong times, and we need to work on this.

“In the first half, we appeared a bit apprehensive. With only two days of training, they seemed a bit confused, and you can see that reflected in the data.”

Mental Struggles on the Pitch

Despite having only two days to work with the entire United squad after the international break, Amorim used his preferred 3-4-3 formation. This system has helped Sporting win two Portuguese titles during his four seasons with the club. However, Amorim acknowledged that United struggled to adjust due to the short preparation time.

“It is difficult with just two days. Everyone talks about the 3-4-3 formation, but that is not the main concern. A system is just a system; we need to improve our understanding of the game significantly,” he stated.

“I understand that it is challenging for some players to grasp this. We have two options: we can choose to win games without taking risks, but I can guarantee that if we go down that path, we will face the same problems at this stage next year.

“Therefore, we will encounter challenges now, but we need to embrace this new approach and strive to perform better at the same time next year.”

Issues with Controlling the Tempo

Amorim expressed doubts about whether United possesses the strength necessary to succeed in the Premier League. He stated, “First, they need to understand the game. Next, they must improve their physical fitness to handle the high pressure. We need time to work on this.

“They desire to achieve this, but sometimes they are unsure of how to do so. That’s my observation.” –– AFP
