England’s captain, Harry Kane, spoke about the recent squad withdrawals: “It’s disappointing to see this happen this week. We’re in a challenging part of the season, and perhaps some are taking advantage of that. To be completely honest, I don’t like it. Representing England should always come before any club situation.”
Harry Kane has expressed his disappointment regarding the number of withdrawals from the England squad this week. He suggested that some players may have forgotten the significance of representing their country. A total of nine players withdrew from the England squad for the upcoming matches against Greece on Thursday and the Republic of Ireland on Monday night.
Carsley, who is overseeing his final camp before the arrival of new boss Thomas Tuchel, will be without several senior players. Aaron Ramsdale, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Levi Colwill, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Cole Palmer, Jack Grealish, and Phil Foden have all withdrawn from the squad, and Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite became the latest to drop out on Wednesday evening.
In light of Branthwaite’s withdrawal, Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah has been added to the squad. Harry Kane is training with the team despite concerns about an injury that could keep him out of the match against Greece. He expressed frustration at being without key players for a crucial match that they need to win to maintain their chances of automatic promotion in the Nations League.
When asked if there was one key aspect that former manager Gareth Southgate implemented, which senior players must ensure is maintained, Kane stated, “[Gareth] Southgate brought the joy of playing for England back. Every camp, people were excited to come; everyone wanted to play for England, and that’s the most important thing. I believe England should come before anything else. England takes precedence over club commitments; it is the most important thing for a professional footballer.”
Kane voiced concern about the situation in the current camp, noting, “It’s a shame this week has turned out this way. It’s a tough time of the season, and perhaps that has been taken advantage of a little.” He added, “I don’t really like it, to be honest. England comes before anything, and any club situation.”
Carsley’s Perspective: Respecting Choices in Withdrawal Situations
During a delayed press conference that started at 10:10 PM in Athens, Carsley stated, “The focus throughout the camp has been on the players who are here. It is important that we make the most of this situation.
With the number of players who have withdrawn, it provides an opportunity for others to represent the team. We’re looking forward to the game.”
Carsley mentioned that none of the current squad members have approached him regarding the issue raised by Kane and dismissed any notion of a club versus country conflict. “No, definitely not,” he said. “Historically, the number of withdrawals we’ve seen in this window has been like this. November has always been a challenging time.
The culture and environment that Gareth, Steve Holland, and the rest of the staff have created has fostered a really positive atmosphere. The players who are here fully deserve their spot and are ready for the game tomorrow [Thursday].”
When asked if he found the withdrawals disrespectful, Carsley responded, “No, not at all. Look at the players we’ve brought in. This is truly a proud moment for them. The focus is on the players that are here, not on those who aren’t.”
Anthony Gordon, who sat next to Carsley during the pre-match press conference, also addressed his own minor injury, saying, “Whatever team I am currently with, the one I’m playing for right now, is what matters most to me because that’s what is in front of me, and that’s the challenge ahead.”
Branthwaite withdraws from England squad
Jarrad Branthwaite has become the ninth player to withdraw from England’s final squad of the year. The Everton centre-back, who was one of five players brought into the squad, had to sit out training and is now officially out.
Jarell Quansah has stepped up from the England Under-21s to take his place for the training sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday. Interim manager Lee Carsley mentioned, “Jarrad stayed behind, and Jarell has replaced him, which is a great opportunity for him. Jarrad had a slight issue that he has experienced in the past, so we weren’t going to take any chances with him. Again, it’s a good opportunity for Jarell.”
Everton released a statement regarding Branthwaite, explaining: “Jarrad Branthwaite has withdrawn from the England squad as a precautionary measure to return to Everton for treatment on a minor groin issue. The Blues defender sustained this niggle during the goalless draw against West Ham United on Saturday. As a result, England interim manager Lee Carsley confirmed in his press conference on Wednesday evening that Branthwaite has left the Three Lions squad to undergo treatment with Everton’s medical team at Finch Farm.”
‘I’m a big England fan’ – Rogers ready to show what he can do
A player who has benefited from the recent withdrawals from Carsley’s squad is Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers, who earned a promotion from the U21 squad. Rogers describes receiving his first senior call-up to the England team as a “pinch-me” moment but believes he can reach even greater heights.
Over the past year, Rogers has experienced a remarkable rise in his career. After leaving Middlesbrough for Aston Villa last January in a deal worth £15 million, he was immediately integrated into the first team at Villa Park. There, he played a key role in helping his new club achieve Champions League qualification for the first time. He has continued to excel this season as Unai Emery’s side has made an impressive start.
“Obviously, I’m a big England fan, so I watched all the internationals growing up. Playing with these players now is a pinch-me moment,” he said. “But I’m really excited to learn what it’s all about and to show what I can do at the same time.”
“I’m enjoying my football at the moment. I think I’m playing pretty well, but I know there’s still work to do and areas to improve. I’m so thankful and grateful to be here. Now I can finally say that I’ve been called up, and it’s a great honor.”
“I strive to push myself every day and see what new levels I can reach. I’ve probably surprised myself at times this season with how well I’ve performed, but I’ve always had that confidence and belief in myself to reach this level and maintain it.”
“It’s really about maintaining my consistency, keeping it going, and hopefully getting better and better while continuing to improve.”
