Leadership Change: Sumair Takes the Helm as PCB COO, Salman Becomes PSL Chief Executive

After serving as Punjab’s caretaker chief minister, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi is continuing to influence the leadership of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). He has appointed Sumair Ahmad Syed as the new Chief Operating Officer (COO), replacing Salman Naseer. This decision, which has been approved by the Board of Governors, reflects Naqvi’s approach of bringing in familiar and like-minded professionals for key roles within the PCB.

Sumair Ahmad Syed’s Background and New Role

Sumair, an experienced civil servant, has previously held the positions of Joint Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office and Secretary to the Chief Minister of Punjab under Naqvi. Mohsin praised Sumair’s administrative skills and expertise, expressing confidence that he will improve the organizational structure of the PCB.

“The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is pleased to announce the appointment of Sumair Ahmad Syed as the new Chief Operating Officer (COO) following approval by the Board of Governors in its 75th meeting, chaired by Mohsin Naqvi at the National Cricket Academy on Saturday afternoon,” said a news release issued by the PCB on Saturday.

Salman Naseer’s Transition to PSL CEO

Salman Naseer, who has made significant contributions as the Chief Operating Officer (COO), has taken on the newly established position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). This role is in line with the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) plans to expand the PSL, which includes the addition of two new teams by 2026.

Earlier, it should be noted that Mohsin appointed three ministers from his provincial cabinet while he served as Punjab’s caretaker chief minister to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). These included former Pakistani pacer Wahab Riaz and analyst Bilal Afzal as national selectors, along with Amir Mir as a consultant.

Mohsin also involved some key bureaucrats in the PCB who had previously worked closely with him during his tenure as chief minister. Sumair, who served as the secretary to the Punjab Chief Minister under Mohsin, was transferred to Islamabad soon after Mohsin’s term ended. He took on the role of joint secretary at the Prime Minister’s House before returning to join the PCB under Mohsin’s leadership.

In a media statement, Mohsin welcomed Sumair to the PCB. “Sumair is an outstanding professional with proven administrative skills and deep industry knowledge. We are delighted to welcome him to the PCB family and are confident that, under his leadership, we will continue to strengthen and improve our administrative structures, moving closer to our goal of becoming a model, high-performing organization,” Mohsin said.

He also expressed his gratitude towards Salman, stating, “Salman has been an exemplary leader at the PCB, making invaluable contributions during his tenure as Chief Operating Officer. Given our plans to establish the Pakistan Super League (PSL) as an independent entity and to expand the league with two additional teams in 2026, we have appointed him as the Chief Executive Officer of PSL. He will also serve as an Advisor to the PCB Chairman.”

On his appointment, Sumair remarked, “It is a profound honor for me to join this dynamic organization as its Chief Operating Officer during these exciting and pivotal times.”
