The four weeks of Formula One (F1) summer weeks feel the longest time for the F1 fans. Among those four weeks, there are 14 days of a mandatory complete shutdown. How does this shutdown work? What are the rules for this, and how does Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA)enforce this? This article explores the rules and workings of the F1 shutdown.
This year’s summer break started on August 4 after the Hungarian Grand Prix. The break will end on 29 August with the Dutch Grand Prix weekend. In these four weeks, while drivers are on break, normally, in the factory, work continues, and teams continue to improve the car.
Among those four weeks, for the two weeks, there has to be a complete shutdown even at the factory, wind tunnel testing, and car design and production, and there is no work done on the car. This is to ensure each staff member gets the much-needed rest and maintains the work-life balance.

Purpose and Importance
- It allows teams and drivers to rest and recharge after the summer break to prepare for the intense season ahead.
- This also prevents teams from gaining any performance advantage.
- A shutdown helps to control the costs.
Rules and Restrictions
- No F1-related activities as discussed above.
- Work also stops at the engine manufacturers’ headquarters, such as Mercedes and Ferrari.
- Every team has to notify the shutdown dates; usually, it’s the second and fourth weeks.
- If any of the rules are violated, teams can be penalised.
- However, non-racing departments such as marketing and HR can still work.
- FIA tracks emails and monitors all activities to ensure shutdown is enforced.
- Maintenance work is still allowed.
When the staff returns after the shutdown, they show renewed energy and focus. It creates better conditions for the staff working and helps maximise the on-track performance. The second shutdown of a similar nature happens when the season concludes in December.
