They played their fifth match against India, which they also lost by 47 runs. Afghanistan was asked to field first and restricted India to 134. Afghanistan took on Australia for their sixth match, which they won by 21 runs. This must have been a high-pressure match for them, as Australia as a side is very strong and gives a hard time to their opponents. Afghanistan posted a total of 149, courtesy of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran. However, it was their bowlers who did a wonderful job, by making it difficult for Australia to score, taking consistent wickets. Gulbadin Najib shone bright with the ball, as he took 4/20. He was also the player of the match.

Afghanistan played their seventh match against Bangladesh and won by 8 runs. Afghanistan once again posted a total of 115 runs with Rahmdullah Gurbaz doing what he does best, scoring 43 off 55 balls. Players to keep an eye out for!

Rahmanullah Gurbaz, 22 years old, is young but has plenty of experience under his belt as he plays in many leagues. He is known for his aggressive batting style, taking the game away from opponents once he’s settled. He will be a vital player for Afghanistan in the semi-final and potentially the final.

Ibrahim Zadran, 22 years old, provides his team with strong starts which greatly benefits the team. He absorbs pressure well and can hit boundaries regularly, crucial for accelerating the run rate. He can clear the boundaries with ease and take the game away from the opponents when it is day. Additionally, he is a sharp fielder, known for his agility in the field.

Rashid Khan, the king of spin in modern-day cricket, is captaining the side this time. He has done well in leading the team from the front. He is a vital player of the Afghanistan cricket team as he gets those crucial wickets when required. He will have a big role to play in the semi-final to take his team through to the final.

Fazalhaq Farooqi can be termed an experienced campaigner as he travels across the globe to play in different leagues. He is putting his experience to good use this tournament and has been having a good tournament with the ball so far. He can break partnerships by taking wickets. Furthermore, he has shown mental resilience in critical situations and has played important roles in taking his team home.

Conclusion

Gurbaz and Zadran are heavily relied on; when they perform, the team often wins. However, if they fail to deliver from the top, the batting order collapses. The middle order needs to step up and support the openers, as the openers won’t always be able to provide a stable start. Afghanistan must step up as a side and perform well in all three departments, making minimal mistakes.

Afghanistan cricket has come a long way given its history. They have done exceptionally well in this World Cup and have secured a spot in the Semi-Final. Defeating a strong team like Australia has boosted their confidence. Rightly so, however, they should not be head over heels just yet, as they still have the trophy to secure and take home.
