From Ashes to Salvation:
Years of conflict in Afghanistan had left very little room for any leisure activities including sports. Despite the numerous hidden talents waiting to have exposure to the outside world, and people loving the sport, there was no secure place to practice the sport. But amidst all the hardships, Afghan Youth was determined and the passion for sport in the heart of people flickered a hope for the establishment of cricket in the country.
The Early Beginnings:
Cricket was primarily obscure in Afghanistan in the earlier stages of its introduction to the people. The first instance of cricket being played in the country, dates back to 1839, during the Anglo-Afghan Wars. The British Troops were seen playing the game.
A spark ignites:
In the 90s, cricket found a fertile ground amongst the Afghan refugees living in Pakistan. The love for the game finally resulted in the formation of the Afghanistan Cricket Federation in 1995. Afghanistan Cricket Board was established in 2001. The formation of a proper cricketing body and international support gave much-needed support to the cause. Cricket facilities were provided and National teams were formed.
Success on the International Stage:
Afghanistan Cricket rose astonishingly on the international stage. They achieved the One-Day status in 2009 and the test nation status in 2017. The achievement of Test Status was the pinnacle of their journey to the ultimate rise in cricket.
This success was fueled by talented players like Rashid Khan, Mohammed Nabi, Mohammad Shehzad, Asghar Afghan, Hashmatullah Shahidi and many more. The young talent has also paved way for more of their recent historical success.

Historical wins in the recent past:
Beating Pakistan in the T20I bilateral series and then in an ODI World Cup game in the 2023 edition started the good days for Afghanistan Cricket. They also beat the World Champions England in the same edition.
In the recent T20I World Cup 2024, Afghanistan had an amazing run and secured the historical semi-final spot after beating Bangladesh today and upsetting Australia in their Super 8 game.

Today the game reigns as the most popular sport in the country. The rapid progress and the historical wins have fueled its development and given a thing to celebrate for the war-struck people of Afghanistan. Every Afghan victory on the international stage is a source of National pride.
