A recent compilation of ball-by-ball data for T20 cricket has shed light on the top false shots and their bringers, indicating which bowlers have consistently troubled batsmen and forced them into errors.
There has been a total of 97497 not-in-control shots that have been played by betters in the last 4 years, and there have been a total of 40938 wickets fallen in all t20s since January 1, 2021. The average number of false shots taken to yield a wicket has been 2.38.

Here’s a breakdown of what we can learn:
Metrics:
- NICS Balls:
Total number of balls bowled by the bowler.
- Impact Wickets:
This metric goes beyond traditional wickets and considers the bowler’s effectiveness in pressuring batsmen. It’s calculated by dividing the bowler’s total “Not in Control” shots induced by the average number of such shots leading to a wicket.
Top Performers:
Rashid Khan mounts the pressure the most on batters and has bowled more than 1000 deliveries where batters found themselves in a quagmire to respond and played a false shot. Seeking the impact that he had put for the team, he has impact wickets of around 457, (impact wickets are obtained by dividing total false shots by the average balls taken to pick up the wicket in t20s in the last 4 years. No wonder why he has demand all over the world for his skills.
In Pakistan Team their spearheads Haris Rauf and Shaheen have induced around 820 and 758 false shots that yielded them around 162 and 161 wickets. Which is far less valuable than the impact they put on the bowling side. He mentioned it in the impact wickets column. Mohammad Amir as he makes his comeback into the side leaves a greater impact as a bowler than what he is rewarded with. Imad Wasim and Naseem Shah have bowled 606 and 563 false shot balls in the last 4 years. These are pretty much those bowlers who will be making their way to the Pakistan squad for the T20 World Cup 2024. So the selection for them is justified.

But this table can be a bit shady because the more a bowler will bowl the more he will induce the false shots, so what if we consider only false shot percentage which will be equal to total false shots divided by total balls bowled by a bowler? For only those bowlers who bowled around a minimum of 500 deliveries.

Bowlers with More False Shots Percentage
Australian pace sensation Spenser Johnson leads the table with around half of his deliveries bowled as false shots or not-in-control shot yielders. When we divide this percentage by the average false shots taken for the wickets which is 2.38 as we calculated above, he picks up around 20 impact wickets per 100 balls in Figure 3 you can check the top 50 bowlers with a maximum frequency of inducing a false shot plus top 5 Pakistani bowlers which could not become part of those 50 bowlers they have calculated individually.

Mohammad Amir and Hasnain bowled with the best false shot percentages of 33 false shots per 100 balls.
Aamer Jamal and Dahani bring 31 false shots per 100 balls. Salman Irshad brings 29 false shots while Naseem, Haris Rauf, Shaheen, and Zaman bowl with 28, 27, 26, and 22 false shot frequency percentages.
