India vs South Africa First Test: What Went Wrong With India?

The India vs South Africa First Test ended very quickly in the 3rd session of the Day three. South Africa defeated India by an innings and 32 runs. What went wrong for India?

First innings: 

India played very underwhelmingly in the first test of the series. The Indian team and players have not been performing well in South Africa for a decade. India has not won any test series there, despite having world-class batsmen and bowlers. In the first innings, the openers got away cheaply, with Rohit Sharma scoring only 5 runs in 14 balls, and Yashasvi Jaiswal scoring 17 runs in 38 balls. Shubhman Gill also got out after scoring only 2 runs. 

After that, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer formed a partnership, but both were dismissed shortly after, scoring 38 in 64 balls and 31 in 50 balls, respectively. Subsequently, KL Rahul became the lone warrior after that, No one else made a significant score for Team India. 

KL Rahul accumulated a total of 101 runs in 137 deliveries, while Shardul Thakur contributed 24 runs in 32 balls. Following this, all other batsmen were dismissed rapidly, and the Indian innings concluded at 245 runs. That is a low score for South Africa in the First test.

In this inning, Kagiso Rabada was the one who destroyed the Indian batting lineup by taking 5 wickets. Then there was debutant Bandre Burger who had taken 3 wickets. Other than that Marco Jansen and Gerald Coetzee got a 1-1 wicket.

Second Innings :

After bowling out the Indian team for 245 runs, South Africa commenced their innings. The beginning for the South African team wasn’t promising, as Aiden Markram was swiftly dismissed after scoring 5 runs in 17 balls. However, the other opener, D. Elgar, performed admirably, scoring a fabulous 185 and batting until the last over. Tony de Zorzi was also dismissed, scoring 28 runs in 62 balls.

Then, K. Petersen was dismissed, scoring 2 runs in 7 balls. David Bedingham’s debut also went well, with him scoring 56 runs in 87 balls; the youngster’s future looks bright. After that, Kyle Verreynne was dismissed after scoring 4 runs in 7 balls. Marco Jansen formed a good partnership with Dean Elgar. As wickets kept falling, South Africa ended up with a lead of 163 runs, scoring a total of 408 runs. 

In this innings, Bumrah took 4 wickets, Mohammad Siraj took 2 wickets, while Shardul Thakur, R Ashwin, and Prasidh Krishna took 1-1 wickets each. South Africa’s score was not enough for India but South Africa bowlers proved it wrong in the 3rd innings of the First test.

Third Innings :

The third innings began with Rohit Sharma getting out for a duck, followed by Yashasvi Jaiswal scoring only 5 runs. Shubhman Gill then formed a solid partnership with Virat Kohli, but he was dismissed after scoring 26 runs in 37 balls. Besides Virat Kohli, no other player managed to reach double digits. 

Kohli scored 76 runs in 82 balls, leading to Team India being bowled out for 131 runs.

The low score is attributed to the debutant Nandre Burger and Marco Jansen, who took 4 and 3 wickets respectively, while Kagiso Rabada and Gerald Coetzee claimed 2 and 1 wicket each.

The man of the match of the First test of the test series between India and South Africa was Dean Elgar who scored an incredible 185 by which South Africa won the match.
