The PCB dilemma, Local coaches vs Foreign coaches

The very old dilemma of the PCB is where the assumption is made that foreign coaches are the solution to all the mess, and while local options are available, desperate attempts are made to attract foreign coaches.

The attractiveness of Foreign Coaches

Other people’s things will always look attractive once they start showing the value or joy it brings them, but it’s not often the toy that brings them that joy, it’s that environment in which it exists.

Pakistan cricket has always been desperate to shop around for foreign coaches, where ridiculous offers are thrown around. Just recently Pakistan came out of a terrible contract they had with Mickey Arthur who was providing his services online as a coach.

Now PCB was in talks with Shane Watson who was looking to become the most expensive coach in International cricket and PCB was willing to cater to all its demands. While that deal broke down, the likes of Justin Langer and Gillespie have already been approached.

Local Coaches in the Shadows

Meanwhile, a lot of local coaches have worked their way up to domestic cricket and to NCA and Franchise cricket. The names of Sajid Shah and Abdur Rehman are a few that are well-known with local cricketers.

At the same time, the likes of Junaid Khan and Yasir Arafat have gotten their certificates and are coaching their respective regions. Just recently, under the coaching of Junaid Khan the Pakistan U-19 team reached the U19 World Cup 2024 finals. The tournament ended up unearthing bowlers like Hunain Shah, Mohmmad Zeeshan and Aamir Hussain.

Meanwhile, there have been reports of PCB being in talks with Misbah as well for the coaching role.

Whoever the coach is, it is hoped that the entourage of team staff will be given a proper long run instead of being terminated before the completion of their contract.
