Tackling World Cup Qualifiers
When asked about the daunting task of the World Cup qualifiers, considering Pakistan has never advanced to the second round, Constantine remarked, “Well, you correctly said that we’ve only had a few days here.” He lauded the team’s dedication by saying, “Yesterday’s session was excellent… The boys that are here are giving everything they have.” He further highlighted the significance of the upcoming games, noting, “I think everybody realizes these two games are massive for the future of Pakistan football.” Emphasizing that this isn’t just about football, but also about national pride, he passionately stated, “This is a country… There are two hundred and eleven countries that play football around the world and we are ranked at hundred and ninety-seven.” Constantine urged everyone in the football community to unite for the betterment of the sport in Pakistan.
Selecting the Best Players
In response to a question about player selection, Constantine acknowledged, “So firstly, I have known for about three or four weeks… I have spoken to five of the seven boys.” He highlighted the challenges of player selection but also his extensive efforts to gather information on both local and foreign-based players.

Comparisons with India
Drawing parallels between his previous stint in India and his new role in Pakistan, Constantine recalled the growth of football in India and emphasized the potential in Pakistan. He stated, “The talent that you have in Pakistan is not being developed… We’re not looking for it.” He pointed out the advantages Pakistan has, especially the ability to field dual-nationality players. Using India’s success in the 2019 Asian Cup as an example, he posed the question, “If India can go to the 2019 Asian Cup, why not Pakistan?”
Abdullah Shah Controversy Addressed
In addressing the recent team selection controversy, I asked about the notable exclusion of Abdullah Shah from the team, “Many fans were surprised not to see Abdullah Shah in the lineup, considering he has a similar player profile like Mamoon. Don’t you think he would have been a good backup, just in case something happens to Mamoon?” Constantine responded, “I have two central defenders from outside and two in the camp. With Shah and Najib, that would be six. I don’t see the point to take six central defenders in a squad of 23.” The coach justified his decision based on the few days of observation and asserted, “I am not trying to please anybody. I am trying to pick the best team for Pakistan. Everybody has their own opinion and at the moment it’s my opinion that counts.”
“You know, I already have two central defenders from overseas and two here in the camp. Including Shah and Najib, that totals six. I don’t see the rationale behind having six central defenders in a 23-player squad. It partly came down to numbers and also a bit about his movement on the field. He’s experienced, yes, but we have other experienced players as well. My selections were based on observations over the past few days. I’m not out to please everyone. My aim is to choose the best lineup for Pakistan. Understandably, as weeks, months, or years go by, there will always be someone dissatisfied with my choices. But that’s how it is. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but right now, as the head coach, it’s my perspective that matters until the situation changes.”

Challenges and the Road Ahead
Acknowledging the challenges, Constantine was candid about the current state of facilities and infrastructure, “If you are asking players to run on the field where there are more potholes… I am not going to accept this.” He emphasized the need for a strong foundation in football, underlining the need for a national league and development leagues at various levels.
