Sri Lanka’s Strategic Moves: Sri Lanka Changed Three Captains For Every Format

Seeing Sri Lanka cricket team performances in all formats and the ODI World Cup in 2023, we understand how awful they were this year. After these disgusting performances, the Sri Lankan cricket board has appointed a new Chief selector Upul Tharanga.

The former Sri Lankan opener after taking the position has sacked the Sri Lanka test captain Dimuth Karunaratne and their Odi-T20 captain Dasun Shanaka following the bad performances in the year 2023. After these events, Sri Lanka changed three captains in all three formats.

Sri Lanka’s New ODI captain 

Kusal Mendis has become the new ODI captain for the Sri Lankan cricket team. Dasun Shanaka’s captaincy was very decent in World Cup 2023, he had lost many matches continuously which is why Sri Lanka changed three captains. Kusal Mendis’s form has been in a dip since the ODI World Cup 2023, he scored 294 runs in total in the ODI World Cup which also includes a century against Pakistan.

The right-handed batter has scored 1094 runs in 33 innings this year. He had captained the Sri Lankan team in the past. He would like to change the dynamics of the Sri Lanka ODI team so there is hope that Kusal Mendis will bring a new era to the Sri Lankan cricket team. 

New Skipper in T20I for Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka changed three captains in the allrounder Wanindu Hasaranga will lead the Sri Lankan cricket team in T20I. The Allrounder has not played in the ODI World Cup in India due to an injury during an Asia Cup match. He has played 5 T20I this year scoring 96 runs and snatching 3 wickets in those games. 

In his leadership, the Sri Lankan team will enter the 2024 T20I World Cup. Sri Lankans would like to change the dynamics of their playing mindset with Hasranga being the captain.

New Test Captain for Sri Lanka

After the test captain Dimuth Karunaratne was sacked, Dhananjaya de Silva will now continue to lead the Sri Lankan cricket team in the Test matches. He flopped in the ODI World Cup with only scoring 140 runs in total. 

He has played brilliantly throughout his Test career; additionally, he can also bowl part-time. When Dhananjaya de Silva played last time in a test where he scored an incredible century. Will he manage to change the dynamics of the Sri Lanka Test cricket team? We will find out about it against Afghanistan. 

In all the formats, the Sri Lankan team was disappointing, but changing the captains is a bold move considering the upcoming T20 World Cup.
