PSB to Send Football Team to Russia for Friendly Match, PFF Left Out of Decision

Reported by Faizan Lakhani on Geo News

October 08, 2024

In an unexpected development, the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) is set to send a football team to Russia for a friendly match on October 11, 2024. This decision has bypassed the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF), the official governing body of football in the country, raising concerns and confusion within the football community.

According to Faizan Lakhani’s report on Geo News, the Russian government extended a formal invitation to Pakistan for the match, intended to strengthen bilateral relations between the two nations. The invitation, delivered via diplomatic channels, came directly from Russia’s Minister of Sport. However, instead of the PFF managing team selection and logistics, the PSB has taken the lead, assembling a squad from what they call “available resources.”

A senior PSB official confirmed that Pakistan will honor Russia’s invitation, despite the PFF previously communicating that they were unable to field a team in such a short timeframe. Negotiations between the PFF and the Russian Football Union had reportedly stalled, with the PFF citing limited time for preparation as the main obstacle.

Lakhani’s report further highlights that Sheikh Rehan, the newly-elected president of the Islamabad Football Association (IFA), had informed the PFF about the PSB’s initiative and sought approval for participation. However, the PFF has yet to give formal consent, stating that any team sent by the PSB would not be considered Pakistan’s official national team.

The uncertainty extends to the match itself, as it remains unclear whether the PSB-assembled team will face Russia’s national team or another squad. This unusual arrangement has left many questioning the legitimacy of the match and its implications for Pakistani football.

In a statement to Sports Side, a PFF spokesperson confirmed, “The PFF is not sending any official team to Russia for this match.”

With the PFF sidelined and the PSB leading the initiative, the future of Pakistan football’s governance and its international engagements are being placed under scrutiny once again. How this development will shape Pakistan’s football landscape remains to be seen.
