Premier League: Title race heats up | Transfer window and clubs’ strategies

Premier League

After the completion of 21 matches of the Premier League, the title race is heating up once again, with Arsenal leading the race, followed by Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and Aston Villa, who are tied on points. Meanwhile, clubs are also looking to bolster their squads as the January transfer window is open, allowing clubs to sign players who can help them get a better finish.

TITLE RACE:

Arsenal are leading the table with 49 points, six points ahead of Manchester City and Aston Villa, while Liverpool completes the top four with 33 points. The race took a thrilling turn after Arsenal’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners aimed to win the game to make their lead stronger prior to Manchester City’s draw with Brighton at the Etihad, but Liverpool’s dominant second-half performance kept them from doing so.

All eyes will be on Saturday’s Manchester derby, where Mikel Arteta’s men will be hoping for City to drop points, while Aston Villa will take on Everton, and Arsenal will be up against Nottingham Forest. Both teams will hope to get three points.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has declared that his team is not focused on winning the Premier League title this year and will shift its focus to securing a top-four finish to qualify for a Champions League spot after a series of draws. However, the road to qualification will not be easy, as Liverpool are being chased by Brentford and Newcastle.

TRANSFER WINDOW AND PREMIER LEAGUE CLUBS:

As the winter transfer window is open and scheduled to close on 2nd February, many clubs are now active in the market, seeking players who can bolster their squads, while a few have already completed transfers.

Manchester City have bolstered their attack with the signing of Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo, who has made his debut in an FA Cup game against Exeter City FC. However, Guardiola also wants to strengthen his backline, as City are attempting to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, who has attracted interest from Premier League giants.

Arsenal, who are sitting at the top of the table, are not interested in signing a player this window.

However, some reports suggest that the Gunners are keen on landing Marc Guehi in the summer window when his contract expires. Some reports from Spain also suggest that they have entered the race to sign Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr and are prepared to offer Gabriel Martinelli in a swap deal.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was rumoured to leave the club at the end of the season, but he dismissed these rumours, adding that he has some “unfinished business” at the club.

Manchester United, who sacked their manager Ruben Amorim earlier this month, are reportedly welcoming Michael Carrick as their interim manager. According to The Athletic, Ruben Neves is on Manchester United’s radar. The club is also rumoured to recall Marcus Rashford from Barcelona and is linked with Carlos Baleba, who is unlikely to move unless a huge offer arrives.

Chelsea, who have also seen changes in management earlier this month after sacking Enzo Maresca and appointing Liam Rosenior, have started to look for players to add strength to the team. According to reports, Chelsea have identified Adam Wharton and Kobbie Mainoo as midfield targets to add creativity, but they are also expected to have a quiet window.

Liverpool, who have had a difficult season, have confirmed the signing of 18-year-old Senegalese defender Mor Talla Ndiaye and are also in the race to sign Marc Guehi, who was expected to make a switch to Liverpool in the summer. Moreover, Liverpool are not planning a signing to replace their injured full-back Conor Bradley.

Tottenham have completed their first signing of the window by signing Conor Gallagher for £34.6 million, and will arrange his medical this week. Thomas Frank’s side is also looking for midfield reinforcements after Rodrigo Bentancur’s injury.

Aston Villa, who are sitting third in the Premier League table, are also active in the market and are linked with Manchester City’s forward Omar Marmoush to bolster their attack.

However, they are also reported to have pulled out of talks for Conor Gallagher. Aston Villa have also completed the transfers of Brian Madjo from Metz and Allyson from Grêmio, and are looking for more signings before the deadline.
