The Pakistan Football Federation(PFF) has announced the addition of Peruvian Head Coach, Nolberto Solano, as the Head Coach of the U23 and Senior Team. Alongside Solano, Argentinian Coach Castañeira has been appointed the Assistant Coach. The duo will make their debut in September in the AFC U23 Asian Cup Qualifiers. Solano replaced English coach Stephen Constantine, who had been in charge since September 2023. This appointment marks PFF President Mohsen Gilani’s first major decision in charge of PFF. Gilani has made it evident that he will develop Pakistan Football under his vision.
Who is Nolberto Solano?
Solano made his professional debut in 1992. He began his career in Peru, at clubs like Sporting Cristal and Deportivo Municipal, which led to him making his International debut in 1994. He later moved to the Argentinian side, Boca Juniors, and made 32 appearances for them. His performances in 1997 led to him being awarded Peru Footballer of the Year, the Best Player in the Copa Libertadores, and being named in the South America Best XI. Solano moved to the English side, Newcastle United, in 1998 and went on to make 172 appearances for them. He continued playing for English sides, such as Aston Villa, West Ham, Leicester City, Hull City, and Hartlepool United. In 2008, Solano was awarded the Best Free Kick taker in the world. Solano eventually retired from professional football in 2012, having made 556 club appearances and scored 107 goals. At the time of retirement, he had 95 caps for the Peru National Team, scoring 20 goals. During his career, Solano played at the Copa America thrice, the CONCACAF Gold Cup, and the FIFA World Cup Playoffs for Peru. He began his coaching career in 2012, beginning at Universitario. Solano made brief spells at clubs like Jose Galvez, Internacional de Toronto, Peru Olympic, AFC Eskilstuna, and Blyth Spartans. His most recent spell was at San Marcos. In 2015, Solano was appointed as the Assistant Coach of the Peru National Team, where he also led the U23 side at the Olympics. He was part of the Peru Coaching staff when they played the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia. In 2022, Peru lost to Australia and failed to qualify for the World Cup, and due to that, the entire coaching panel resigned, including Solano.

Who is Jorge Castañeira?
Joining Nolberto Solano as Assistant Coach is Argentinian coach Jorge Castañeira. Jorge has been appointed as a Fitness Coach multiple times during his career. He has been at clubs like Newell’s, San Marcos, Deportivo Municipal, and also the Venezuela National Team. His most recent spell was at Santos FC. Jorge has also authored 3 footballing books. He has been coaching for almost 3 decades in various countries.
Stephen Constantine’s Era
Stephen Constantine was appointed in September 2023 for the World Cup Qualifier against Cambodia. He managed to draw the first leg and win the second leg 1-0, winning Pakistan’s first-ever FIFA World Cup Qualifier in history. He went on to manage Pakistan in the second round as well, playing against Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, and Jordan. Pakistan failed to get a single point in their group, scoring only once and losing all 6 games. In the Asian Cup Qualifiers, Constantine opened his account with a 2-0 loss to Syria and later a 1-0 loss against Myanmar, which left fans disappointed. Constantine was often criticized for his long-ball tactics and his personal issues with Fan Favorite Otis Khan and other players like Abdullah Shah, Adil Nabi, and Etzaz Hussain. In his time as Pakistan’s Head Coach, Constantine was in charge for 10 games, losing 8 and winning and drawing his sole game against Cambodia.
Future Challenges
The coaching duo will begin their Pakistan coaching career in September in the AFC U23 Asian Cup Qualifiers, where the team will play 3 matches. After that, Pakistan will be in action in October in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers against Afghanistan, playing twice. In November, Pakistan will play Syria. Ending their Asian Cup Qualifiers campaign, Pakistan will play Myanmar in March. With reports of the SAFF Championship being held in 2026, the fans are excited to see new faces at the helm after disappointing outings with Constantine. Sharing his views on the appointments, the PFF President, Mohsen Gilani, said, “Nolberto Solano is a big name in world football, while Jorge Castañeira brings top-level fitness training to our team. Together, they will help us build a strong and professional future for football in our country.”
