Is domestic cricket really the criteria for team selection in the Pakistan national side?

The way Pakistan picks its cricket team has always been talked about a lot. People wonder why the selectors make certain choices and if they’re being fair, during the team selection.

Even though Pakistan has three big cricket tournaments within the country – the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, Pakistan Cup, and National T20 Cup – it seems like doing well in these doesn’t guarantee selection in the national team.

Significance of Quaid e Azam trophy:

The Quaid-e-Azam Trophy is a big deal in Pakistan cricket. It’s like a testing ground for new players to show how good they are. But there’s a problem – players who do amazingly well in these tournaments often don’t get picked for the national team.

This happened again recently when they announced the team for the Test series against Australia. People are questioning whether the selectors are good at recognizing and rewarding talent.

Injustice with Sahibazada Farhan:

Wahab Riaz, the new selector, was supposed to bring a fresh approach and pick players based on how good they are. But the team he picked has confused many. Some players who did really well in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, like Sahibzada Farhan who scored the most runs with 847, are not in the team. This has caused a lot of arguments.

Saim picked over the top run-getter of the tournament:

Sarfaraz Ahmed is the only player from the top 5 run-getters in the Quaid e Azam trophy who got selected in the national side.. But people are asking why some players who did great in local tournaments are left out. Saim Ayub, who was the sixth-highest run-scorer, got picked over Sahibzada Farhan, which has left fans and experts puzzled. Even though Saim Ayub is talented, people are not sure why the top scorer is not in the team.

Muhammad Ali dropped:

Another confusing case is Muhammad Ali. He got dropped from the national Test side after just 2 test matches last year against England, but in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2023, he’s the third-highest wicket-taker, just behind Khurram Shahzad and Ameer Hamza.

This makes people question if the selection process is consistent and logical. It seems like there’s a big gap between doing well in local matches and getting recognized for the national team, and good players are being left out.

Conclusion:

To make things better and stop fans and players from getting upset, the selectors in Pakistan need to explain how they pick players for the national team. The way they do it now is unclear, and people doubt if it’s fair.

The selectors should have a clear set of rules that not only look at individual performances but also consider things like how well a player fits into the team if they can play different formats, and if they can handle the pressure of international matches.
