The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is approaching its ninth season with anticipation building across the cricketing world. With the recent conclusion of the trade window, franchises have made strategic retentions, solidifying their cores while looking towards the future with exciting young talent.
Strategic use of the Brand Ambassador and Mentor roles allowed franchises to lower the categories of desired players, freeing up valuable slots in higher categories for other acquisitions. Efficient use of these rules provided teams with greater flexibility in building balanced and competitive rosters.
Trade Window Fireworks:
The recently concluded trade window witnessed a flurry of activity, as franchises sought to address their needs and bolster their squads. Naseem Shah’s transfer saga would probably go down as the most suspenseful trade in PSL history. These trades highlight the increasing competitiveness of the league, as franchises strive to build well-balanced teams capable of challenging for the coveted PSL trophy.
Lahore Qalandar’s Retentions:
Platinum: Shaheen
Diamond: Rauf(BA), Weise
Gold: Sikander, Abdullah, Zaman
Silver: Mirza Tahir Baig, Rashid Khan
Emerging:
Not many surprises here with the Captain Dependable being the sole Platinum Pick here. Rashid in silver, however, might come odd to some people but that could most definitely mean that he is not expecting himself to be fit till the PSL and wants Qalandars to stand a chance to retain him in the next season. Fakhar Zaman, yet again not retained but only to be re-picked in the draft. One question that begs an answer is does Weise really prove his worth as a Diamond Pick?
Multan Sultan’s Retentions:
Platinum: Rizwan, Iftikhar Ahmed
Diamond: Khushdil Shah, Usama Mir
Gold: Abbas Afridi
Silver: Ihsanullah(BA)
Emerging: Faisal Akram
Fair to say that Multan under the new management has already seen a lot of shakeups. They were arguably the most involved team in the trade window. Two prominent trades were carried out by the Janoobis. Grabbing the hottest middle-order commodity and a chinaman for two of their poster boys, Sultans made sure they were compensated a little extra as well. A solid local core with first picks in both Platinum and Diamond, expect them to take their roster up a notch in the draft.

Islamabad United’s Retentions:
Platinum: Shadab, Naseem
Diamond: Imad (Mentor), Azam
Gold: Hales, Faheem (BA), Munro
Silver: Rumman
Emerging:
After weeks of speculation and intense negotiations, United had finally secured the coveted young fast bowler in a dramatic deal that saw them part ways with promising talents Abrar Ahmed and Wasim Jr. The acquisition of Naseem was a major coup for the franchise, filling a crucial gap in their bowling line-up and sending shockwaves through the league.
The sheer audacity and strategic brilliance of United’s management in navigating the complex trade negotiations cemented their reputation as a DimaghSe team. With the addition of Naseem and steals of Munro and Hales in Gold, the already formidable United outfit transformed into a force to be reckoned with, leaving their rivals scrambling to respond.
Peshawar Zalmi’s Retentions:
Platinum: Babar, Powell
Diamond: Saim, TKC
Gold: Haris(BA), Jamal
Silver: Khurram Shehzad
Emerging: Haseebullah
Zalmi’s retentions paint a picture of a team with arguably the most fearsome top-order in the PSL. With Haris, Saim, and Babar – the three best T20 batters in Pakistan – forming the core, Zalmi have the potential to dominate the powerplay and set imposing totals. However, their bowling attack remains a major concern.
While the retention of young talent like Haseebullah offers promise, the lack of established bowlers raises questions about their ability to defend those totals. Zalmi’s success will hinge on finding solutions to their bowling woes, either through picking overseas Pacers or RTMing Local boys. Only then can they truly translate the potential of their batting prowess into championship glory.
Quetta Gladiator’s Retentions:
Platinum: Rossouw
Diamond: Wasim Jnr, Roy, Hasaranga
Gold: Hasnain, Abrar, Sarfaraz
Silver: Smeed
Emerging:
Gladiators’ retentions tell a complex story, marked by loyalty, betrayal, and the pursuit of second chances. Despite releasing loyal players like Nawaz, Quetta Gladiators retained faith in veterans like Sarfaraz and Hasaranga, who practically betrayed them last season.
The return of Rossouw and Watson, architects of past glory, fuels hope of rekindling their championship fire. The future, meanwhile, promises to be bright with the electrifying pace duo of Hasnain and Wasim Jr., ready to unleash their fury on the PSL stage and try to collectively produce the same output as a single Naseem Shah.

Karachi King’s Retentions:
Platinum:
Diamond: Vince, Hassan Ali
Gold: Shan(BA), Malik(Mentor), Shamsi
Silver: Mir Hamza, Muhammad Akhlaq
Emerging: Irfan Khan
Kings are aiming to rewrite their script under new leadership, with Haider Azhar at the wheel. Their retentions hint at a clear shift in approach, prioritizing team culture and clean image. Gone are the likes of Sharjeel Khan, Mohammad Amir, and Imad Wasim, players who, despite their talent, were never fully embraced by the fans due to past controversies.
In their place, the Kings have opted for stability and experience, retaining James Vince and Malik as their core players. The addition of Shan Masood as captain, acquired in a last-minute trade, brings a fresh perspective and leadership qualities. While the release of Imad Wasim, last season’s top performer, may raise eyebrows, it signals a commitment to building a team beyond individual brilliance.
Anticipation Builds for Draft:
With the retentions finalized and the trade window closed, all eyes now turn to the upcoming draft. Franchises will have the chance to fill out their rosters with exciting young talent and seasoned veterans, aiming to build championship-caliber teams. Fans can expect a strategic battle, with franchises carefully weighing their options and building spicy squads
