Can Russell catch up, or has Antonelli gone too far?
After the conclusion of the Canadian GP, which Russell was not able to finish, he admitted that the championship was now Antonelli’s to lose. No matter how much Russell insists he is not bothered deep down, he will be gutted. This year represents his best opportunity yet to win that long-awaited championship.
At this stage, even if Russel were to win consecutive 10 races with Antonelli finishing second in each of them, he would still trail the Italian in the standings. More concerning for Russell is that Antonelli is only improving with no signs of slowing down.
Just like most of the sports, F1 is uncertain, and if a couple of things go in Russell’s favor, he can be on top again. Historically, drivers have made comebacks from far worse positions. If Russell wants to be included in that list, he has to do something now, as he has already fallen to third in the championship standings.
Will McLaren’s Misery End?
After enjoying a successful season last year, McLaren has endured a difficult campaign so far in 2026. The team required time to understand the Mercedes power unit, and the transition has not gone as smoothly as expected. Their struggles were highlighted at the Chinese GP, where neither driver was able to start the race due to technical issues.
Defending world champion Lando Norris has failed to finish the last two races because of reliability problems. After six races, the papaya outfit sits third in the Constructors’ Championship, 47 points behind Ferrari in second place. Meanwhile, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris occupy fifth and sixth positions, respectively, in the Drivers’ Championship.
There were a few glimpses of improvement, such as Norris’s sprint win and Oscar Piastri’s podium, but overall it’s been a disappointing season.
Now, attention turns to the Spanish GP. Can McLaren overcome its technical issues and return to the fight at the front?
Can Hamilton get his first win in Red?
With the two back-to-back podiums, it seems Hamilton is back on track. After a difficult debut year at Ferrari, this year feels like a breath of fresh air. With last Sunday’s podium, he is now second in the drivers’ championship, 66 points behind the leader, Antonelli.
Having returned to the podium, the next target he will be eyeing is his first race win with the Italian outfit. Right now, he is in a very good position to achieve this. However, considering Antonelli’s current form, it will be a far-from-easy task.
