Can Ronaldo Add the World Cup to His Trophy Cabinet? | Portugal 2026 World Cup Squad Preview

Portugal 2026 World Cup Squad Preview

Portugal enters the World Cup as one of the favourites to win the tournament. With Roberto Martinez at the helm, the team hopes to lift the trophy for the first time in its history. The biggest storyline surrounding the team is Cristiano Ronaldo’s last dance on the international stage as he makes his sixth and likely final World Cup appearance.

GOALKEEPERS

Surprisingly, there are four goalkeepers included in the 26-man squad, which has raised questions among fans and pundits. With Diogo Costa likely to play every match as the first-choice goalkeeper and José Sá providing reliable backup, many believe there was little need for a fourth goalkeeper. Instead, that spot could have been used for an outfield player in another position.

DEFENCE

The defence looks rock solid, especially in the full-back positions. Nuno Mendes is currently regarded as one of the best left-backs in the world, while Matheus Nunes, who has successfully transitioned from midfield to full-back at Manchester City, also enjoyed a strong season with his club. He excels in aerial and defensive duels while providing good transition speed.

João Cancelo adds further versatility, as he can operate on either flank, while the experienced Rúben Dias provides leadership and stability at the heart of the defence.

BIG MISSES

The exclusion of António Silva is surprising, but his recent performances partly justify the decision. Once considered one of Portugal’s most exciting defensive prospects, Silva has struggled for form and become more error-prone. After a disappointing season with Benfica, Martinez opted for Renato Veiga, who had already been involved in previous national team camps.

MIDFIELD

Portugal possess one of the strongest midfields in the tournament. The squad includes players such as Vitinha, who brilliantly controls the tempo of matches, Bruno Fernandes, who will likely be the most important component of the midfield, and Bernardo Silva, whose versatility allows him to play in the half-spaces, as part of a double pivot, or on the right wing.

This midfield perfectly suits Roberto Martinez’s philosophy, which focuses on patient build-up play and maintaining control of possession.

BIG MISSES

Mateus Fernandes, one of West Ham’s most in-form players, has drawn interest from several major clubs, including Premier League champions Arsenal. Despite his impressive passing ability, which placed him among the league’s leaders in successful long passes, he has been left out of the squad.

João Palhinha has also been excluded from the 26-man squad, a decision that surprised many supporters given his defensive qualities and experience.

ATTACK

Portugal boasts a highly creative and technical attack. Rafael Leão provides pace and flair, although inconsistency remains a concern. Francisco Conceição brings excellent one-on-one ability, while Francisco Trincão has enjoyed a strong season.

João Félix, after struggling for form in recent years, has regained momentum after playing alongside Cristiano Ronaldo at Al Nassr.

Leading the line is captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who despite his age has continued to deliver for his country, scoring 25 goals in his last 30 appearances for Portugal.

BIG MISSES

Sporting CP winger Pedro Gonçalves has been overlooked despite enjoying an outstanding season in which he scored 15 goals and provided 9 assists in 40 matches. Young prospect Rodrigo Mora has also been left out of the squad.

PORTUGAL’S PLAYING STYLE

Roberto Martinez adopts a pragmatic approach that prioritises control over chaos. His teams aim to dominate possession and dictate the tempo of matches. Portugal generally build attacks from the back and progress forward patiently before looking to create openings in the final third.

However, the lack of natural ball-winning midfielders could become an issue against stronger opposition during the latter stages of the tournament.
