Australian Squad for ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Surprises and Returning Faces

Australian Squad has sprung some surprises in their selection for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA. The squad announcement revealed several big names missing out, while others made unexpected returns.

Australian Squad opens their campaign against Oman on June 5th, followed by matches against England, Namibia, and Scotland in Group B. Here is our review of the 15-men squad selected to travel for the event:

Veteran Smith Misses Out, Agar Recalled

Veteran batsman Steve Smith is the most notable absentee. Youngster Jake Fraser-McGurk experienced seamer Jason Behrendorff, and all-rounder Matt Short also failed to cut. Left-arm spinner Ashton Agar, however, earned a recall despite not playing a T20I since the 2022 World Cup on home soil. This bolsters Australia’s all-round options alongside established names like Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, and Cameron Green.

Marsh Confirmed as Captain

Mitchell Marsh will lead the side, with his promotion to full-time T20I captain confirmed alongside the squad announcement.

Selection chair George Bailey expressed confidence in the squad’s balance and ability to perform at the World Cup.

“This is an experienced squad with a variety of structures and covers the scenarios we believe will be important in the West Indies,” Bailey said. “[We are] great to have Ashton Agar back… [He] can play a critical role…”

Tough Calls Made in Tight Selection Race for Australian Squad

Bailey acknowledged the difficulty in selecting a squad of just 15 players, with several in-form players missing out.

“Steve Smith, Matt Short… were all part of long conversations,” Bailey said. “Being constrained to a squad of 15… is always a challenge…”

The option to make changes to the squad remains open until the tournament begins.

Marsh Ready to Lead at World Cup

Mitch Marsh, who has captained the T20I side on an interim basis for the past year, is excited for his first major tournament as skipper.

“It’s an immense privilege… to now lead the squad to a World Cup,” Marsh said. “…We have had some strong success in recent times and I am hopeful that will continue…”
