The 2026 Formula One (F1) season continues this week in Canada, and the championship battle is beginning to enter a thrilling phase. Mercedes and Kimi Antonelli have dominated the season so far, but with the rival teams stepping up their development, will the team and the young Italian now come under pressure? It will be interesting to see how they respond.

Mercedes’ internal dynamics will also be worth monitoring. On one side, they have teenage prodigy Kimi Antonelli, who has a chance to make history. On the other hand, they have George Russell, who has spent years with the team, and this could represent his best opportunity to win a world championship. Will this turn into another Lewis Hamilton-Nico Rosberg-style rivalry, or will Mercedes manage the situation better this time around?

The regulation tweaks, teams’ adaptation to them, and the ADUO (Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities) decisions will also become clearer after this weekend. Below are some of the biggest storylines heading into the Canadian Grand Prix weekend.

Track and Weather 2026 Canadian GP

The 2026 Canadian GP takes place on the infamous Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, one of the trickiest circuits on the calendar. For the 1967 World Fair Expo, a man-made island, Notre Dame Island, was built in the middle of the St Lawrence River.  After the Expo and the Summer Olympics, some suggested using the road on the island as a race track, and thus Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve came into being.

The first ever Grand Prix was held in 1978. Back then, it was called Circuit Ile Notre-Dame, and Giles Vlleneve claimed his maiden victory, and later the track was named after him.

The Circuit is challenging for drivers as it features a lot of chicanes with concrete walls, which punish the drivers for the slightest mistakes.  The track is quite, start-stop with heavy braking zones, and the final hairpin where drivers have to be very careful. The track is quick and flowing at the end of the lap, and there is an iconic wall of champions which brutally punishes those who make mistakes and was named after the fact that three World Champions, Michael Schumacher, Jacques Villeneuve, and Damon Hill, all hit it in the same race weekend in 1999.

The weather is expected to be cool with generally pleasant conditions throughout the weekend. However, there is a chance of scattered showers on race day, which could add another layer of unpredictability to the Grand Prix.

An opportunity for George Russell to make a comeback

At the start of the 2026 season, George Russell was considered the driver to beat due to his superior Mercedes car. In Australia, he proved this true by starting the campaign with a win. In Shanghai, he suffered a technical issue during qualifying, which gave Kimi Antonelli an opportunity, and he secured his maiden pole and subsequently the win. After this, Antonneli went on to secure three consecutive wins, leading the championship by 20 points.

In Florida, Russell again struggled, and his championship pursuit seemed in jeopardy. Now, coming to Montreal, which is a happy hunting ground for the Briton. This gives him a good chance to make a comeback and take back control and the championship lead.

Can Ferrari get their first breakthrough?

Ferrari has been the only team consistently capable of challenging Mercedes during the opening phase of the season. The Italian outfit has shown strong pace, secured multiple podium finishes, and often started races competitively, but it is still searching for its first victory of the year.

Technical limitations and strategic mistakes have repeatedly prevented Ferrari from converting opportunities into wins.

Since the Miami Grand Prix, McLaren has also taken a significant step forward with its upgrades. At the same time, Red Bull Racing appears to be making steady progress with its own development package. With competition intensifying, it will be fascinating to see whether Ferrari can finally secure a breakthrough result and remain firmly in championship contention.

First Ever Canadian GP Sprint

The Canadian GP Weekend will also feature the first-ever sprint weekend in Canada, which means more competitive sessions and an opportunity to score extra points. This also limits the practice time, which, on a track like Montreal, is much needed.
