Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli – Are they finished?

Two of the greatest batsmen, Rohit Sharma also known as Hitman, and Virat Kohli a part of the Fab Four, have been the talk of the town recently. The two are currently playing in the ICC T20I World Cup 2024. Unfortunately, both players aren’t having the best tournament with the bat, leading to the question – are Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli finished?

Overview of the ICC T20I World Cup 2024 Performance

Rohit Sharma, the captain and opener for his side, is known for his aggressive batting style and ability to dominate the opposition. Sharma’s batting performance in the ongoing ICC T20I World Cup has been disappointing. His recent scores include 13 against Pakistan, 23 against Bangladesh, and 3 against the USA. These scores show that he has not found his rhythm in the tournament as of yet.

Virat Kohli, the former captain of the Indian cricket team, usually plays at number 3 but has been opening the batting with Rohit Sharma in the ongoing ICC T20I World Cup 2024. Kohli is lauded for his consistency, and ability to finish the game when required taking his team home, making him a vital asset to the Indian team. However, similar to Sharma, Kohli has struggled to find his flow in the current tournament. His recent scores consist of 4 against Pakistan, 24 against Afghanistan, 0 against the USA, and 37 against Bangladesh.

Sharma and Kohli’s last tournament?

Sharma, aged 37, debuted in international cricket in 2007. Kohli, aged 35, made his international debut in 2008. Both batsmen are fit and still have the hunger to achieve more, which motivates them. Across all formats of the game, they have made noticeable contributions. As of now, there is no news regarding the duo’s retirement. Chances are high that they will play in at least one if not two, major tournaments. With the Champions Trophy right around the corner, we can expect Sharma and Kohli to be in action.

Who is to replace Sharma and Kohli?

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have contributed immensely to Indian cricket. They have won tournaments that highlight their impressive skills. They have their eyes on the ICC T20I World Cup 2024 trophy and are likely hoping to take it home.

However, as time passes, both players are approaching the final stages of their careers, raising the question of who will fill their spots once they retire. When the time is close, the management will need to analyze and decide who can fill the shoes of these two, who have served and given all they could to the sport. In the current Indian team/domestic unit, there is plenty of young batting talent to potentially fill the void.

Shubman Gill has emerged as a promising talent in Indian cricket. He recently captained the Gujrat Titans in the IPL, showcasing leadership skills that suggest he could potentially captain India in the future. Gill has done exceptionally well in ODIs, exhibiting elegant drives, and a range of shots, which make him a strong candidate for occupying any of the top three positions in the batting lineup in the future. He could bat as an opener or bat at number 3 given his sound technique allowing him to build the score as needed.

Rishabh Pant has made a comeback after healing from an unfortunate incident. In the ongoing tournament, we have seen him batting at number 3, and performing well. He is an aggressive batter and can play traditional and innovative shots, which makes him a perfect fit to bat at number 3. Pant can shift the tide of the game with explosive shots, accelerating the run rate and putting pressure back on the opponents whenever required.

Prithiv Shav, an opening batsman, is known for his aggressive batting approach. He can prove to be a vital player for India in limited-overs cricket because he dominates the opposing bowlers on any given day, making his intentions clear from the onset.  Further, he is strong on his back foot, plays graceful strokes, and can clear the boundaries. Though, he has been in and out of form, when given a chance can do wonders for India.

Although only three individuals have been mentioned as potential replacements for these two batters, there are plenty more candidates who can qualify to fill in the opener position, number three, and even the captaincy position.

Conclusion

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been exceptional ambassadors of the game, achieving multiple milestones coupled with winning memorable tournaments.

However, as all good things must end, soon these legends will bid farewell to cricket, creating the way for young talent to step up fill their spots through their skills, and carry on their legacy. Worldcup wise, maybe both the players will end up performing in a big game!
