Reasons for Pakistan Cricket’s Downfall, who is to blame?

In recent years, the Pakistan cricket team has posed challenges to other cricket teams across the globe. This team captained by Babar Azam reached the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 and the final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022.

However, the recent team performances have been poor, signifying that players are lacking motivation and form. The current squad failed to qualify for the Super 8 stage of the World Cup, reaching one of the lowest points in history. This is a clear sign of Pakistan cricket’s downfall. The question arises, what are the reasons for the downfall of Pakistan cricket, and who is to blame?

Leadership and captaincy issues

Before the ICC T20 Worldcup 2024, Babar Azam had resigned from all captaincy roles, with Shaheen Shah Afridi taking over white ball captaincy. However, Afridi’s tenure as a captain was short, leading to rumors about Babar’s return to leadership. Azam was reappointed as Pakistan’s white-ball captain a couple of months ahead of the World Cup in hopes of bringing the trophy home.

Since Babar has returned as a captain for the second time, they have lost a couple of series. Critics argue that this time around, his captaincy has been questionable, even though he led the team to qualify for the ICC World Cup Semi-finals in 2021 and the ICC World Cup final in 2022.

The recent failures have stirred the pot regarding changing the captain yet again. On the other hand, some individuals disagree and think that Babar is not the root of the problem, as under his captaincy, the team previously reached exceptional heights, became world #1, and nearly secured two World Cup titles in a row.

Inaccurate Squad Selection & Players out of form

Breaking it down, the squad selection was inaccurate due to resource limitations. The team consisted of five openers: Usman Khan, Saim Ayub, Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam, and Mohammad Rizwan. A pivotal issue was the lack of a proper middle order, essential for building the team’s total or chase in case the openers failed to provide a solid base.

Coming to form, Shaheen Shah Afridi has lost his spark. The first-over wicket-taker Shaheen we all knew is missing. He used to be a nightmare for opponents, taking early wickets & setting the tone in matches. The prime leg spinner, Shadab Khan, was out of form with the ball and could not provide crucial breakthroughs when required.

Iftikhar struggled to finish games, and Abrar Ahmed, chosen as a mystery spinner, returned to Pakistan without playing a single game. Despite various opportunities, Azam Khan failed to make an impact with the bat.

Crickets argue that Asif Ali, despite being out of form should have been included. As a power-hitter, his job is to finish games, and given the chance to regain form, he could have done some damage to the opponents and favored his team.

Additionally, Mohammad Haris, a versatile batter capable of taking on opposition bowlers proving a solid start, should have been given a chance. Furthermore, Kamran Ghulam, a sound batter with good technique, could have provided stability in the middle order.

Inconsistency in management

Significant instability has been caused due to the constant changes from chairmen to captains to coaches. Information given to the media suggests that there are internal politics, the team is not on one page, and blame games are continuing in full swing. All of these factors are worsening the situation. However, the accuracy of this news is still unclear.

Technical Complications

Cricket is a dynamic game that evolves regularly, requiring players to adapt and evolve alongside it to stay in the business. Unfortunately, some players in the team are lacking in this aspect resulting in losses. Some critics argue that on-field strategies, such as the field setting & bowler choices in certain matches, are questionable.

Conclusion

These recent events are proof that a recipe for disaster had been brewing in recent months. Firstly, the leadership uncertainty needs to be solved; the captain needs clarity on his future role, and whether he will be continuing or not.

Secondly, a new plan is required for T20 cricket- a new team needs to be built, training young talent for future events. Lastly, the team must unify, shutting down rumors and negativity. They should play for the nation, support each other, and revive the pride they once brought to the nation in the previous years.
