It’s no secret that Chelsea Football Club is no longer the dominant force it once was. The club seemed to have everything going for it when they lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy in Porto back in 2021. However, their fortunes turned for the worse after their European triumph. Roman Abramovich, one of the most influential figures in football at the time, faced sanctions from the UK government due to his close ties with Vladimir Putin amidst the Russia-Ukraine conflict. As a result, Abramovich was compelled to sell Chelsea Football Club to a consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.
The New Era
With the change in ownership, a new era began at Stamford Bridge in 2022. The 2022/23 season marked the first test for the new ownership. Todd Boehly, the face of the consortium, took temporary charge as the chairman of Chelsea after the previous chairman, Bruce Buck, decided to step down. Additionally, Petr Čech and Marina Granovskaia, integral parts of the club’s hierarchy under Abramovich, also left Chelsea. As a result, the established structure set by Abramovich was no longer in place.
Start of the Season 22/23
During the summer of 2022, Chelsea broke their club record by spending a total of £273 million in the transfer market. Players such as Kalidou Koulibaly, Marc Cucurella, Raheem Sterling, Wesley Fofana, Carney Chukwameka, Gabriel Slonina, Cesare Casadei, Dennis Zakaria (on loan), and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were brought in to strengthen the squad on the advice of the then-manager, Thomas Tuchel. However, Tuchel had a shaky start to the season, and the final blow to his managerial career at Chelsea came with a defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in UCL.

Graham Potter Era
Following Tuchel’s departure, Graham Potter, the former manager of Brighton & Hove Albion F.C., was appointed as his replacement. Potter’s tenure got off to a promising start, with Chelsea winning six and drawing three out of their first nine games under his management. However, their problems began to surface in Potter’s tenth game against his former club, Brighton.
Winter 22/23
Chelsea went on a spending spree during the January transfer window, shocking the world with their extravagant signings. The club splurged £323 million on players like Enzo Fernandes, Joao Felix (loan), Mykhailo Mudryk, Benoit Badiashile, and more. Despite the significant investment, Chelsea’s performance on the pitch deteriorated further. Some argued that the squad had become too bloated for Potter to manage effectively, and injuries to key players compounded their troubles. While Chelsea managed to reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League, their Premier League form was nothing short of disastrous, with the team dropping out of the top 10.
Ultimately, the Chelsea board made the tough decision to sack Graham Potter. Despite being touted as the long-term manager, Potter’s time at Chelsea came to an end. He managed 31 games, winning 12, losing 11, and drawing 8, resulting in a win percentage of 38.7%(including all competitions). Frank Lampard took over as interim manager until the end of the season.
Frank Lampard the interim manager
Frank Lampard’s second stint as Chelsea’s manager got off to a terrible start. The club had not experienced such poor performances since Roman Abramovich’s takeover in the early 2000s. What began as a somewhat decent season ended as a horror show for Chelsea supporters worldwide. Lampard remained in charge until the end of the season, overseeing a record of 11 games played, 1 win, 2 draws, and 8 losses.
Overall, Chelsea finished the season with 11 wins, 11 draws, and 16 losses, resulting in a disappointing 12th-place finish in the Premier League table and missing out on European competitions for the following season. Undoubtedly, a season to forget for the Blues.
What’s next for Chelsea?
Multiple sources have confirmed that Mauricio Pochettino will be the next manager of Chelsea Football Club. Given Pochettino’s track record, which shows success with a youth-oriented team, it aligns with Todd Boehly’s vision since taking over the club. Chelsea plans to undergo a significant squad overhaul, with reports suggesting the departures of players such as Mason Mount, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Cesar Azpilicueta, Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech, Conor Gallagher, Mateo Kovacic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Edouard Mendy, and more.
In addition to the departures, Chelsea aims to sign a striker, although Romelu Lukaku’s future remains uncertain. A defensive midfielder is also on their radar to accommodate Enzo Fernandes, and the signing of Christopher Nkunku, confirmed by Fabrizio Romano since December, is another step toward strengthening the squad. Pochettino plans to work closely with the board on incoming and outgoing transfers.
Undoubtedly, it is an uncertain time for Chelsea Football Club. The managerial change will be a make-or-break decision for the Blues as they seek to rebuild and return to their former glory.
Chelsea Football Club: Reviving Glory Under Mauricio Pochettino
With the departure of Roman Abramovich and a string of managerial changes, Chelsea Football Club faces an uncertain future. The disappointing performances of recent seasons have left the club outside of European competitions and in need of a significant squad overhaul. As Mauricio Pochettino takes the reins, the focus shifts towards a youth-oriented approach and strategic signings. Chelsea’s success in this pivotal phase will determine their ability to rise again as a dominant force in football. Supporters and enthusiasts eagerly await the next chapter in Chelsea’s journey, hoping for a revival that will restore the club’s former glory.
