Trouble at FC Barcelona?

FC Barcelona is facing internal turmoil in its goalkeeping department, as Iñaki Peña finds himself on the sidelines after initially stepping up in Marc-André ter Stegen’s absence. The young Spanish goalkeeper was expected to hold down the fort after ter Stegen suffered a long-term injury, but recent events have seen him lose his place to veteran Wojciech Szczęsny. Following a tense discussion with head coach Hansi Flick, Peña is now reconsidering his future at the club.

A Goalkeeping Shakeup at FC Barcelona

FC Barcelona is facing a major goalkeeping dilemma following the long-term injury of first-choice shot-stopper Marc-André ter Stegen. The German goalkeeper suffered a complete rupture of the patellar tendon in his right knee during a match against Villarreal in September 2024, ruling him out for the rest of the season. With his absence, the club initially turned to Iñaki Peña, who had been patiently waiting for his opportunity as ter Stegen’s backup.

However, in October 2024, Barcelona moved swiftly to sign veteran goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny. The former Juventus star had recently announced his retirement but was convinced to join the Catalan club as an emergency solution to provide experience in goal. Despite Peña being given the initial nod in ter Stegen’s absence, things quickly took a turn that has left the young Spaniard reconsidering his future at the club.

Flick’s Decision: Why Szczęsny Took Over

Peña’s time as FC Barcelona’s starting goalkeeper was cut short following an incident before a crucial Supercopa de España match against Athletic Club in January 2025. Reports suggest that Peña arrived late for a pre-game activation session, which did not sit well with head coach Hansi Flick. As a result, Flick opted to start Szczęsny for the match—a decision that marked a turning point in FC Barcelona’s goalkeeping hierarchy.

Since then, Szczęsny has cemented himself as Flick’s preferred option between the posts.

The FC Barcelona coach publicly backed the Polish goalkeeper, stating, “My job is to make the decision on this position… for me, Tek (Szczęsny) is an experienced player and he has a good personality, but both of them are great goalkeepers.”

This statement confirmed that Szczęsny was now the club’s first-choice keeper, leaving Peña in an uncertain position. While the young Spaniard has shown glimpses of promise, Flick appears to favor Szczęsny’s experience and leadership, especially as FC Barcelona looks to stabilize its form in La Liga and other competitions.

What’s Next for Iñaki Peña?

Understandably, Peña is now weighing his options. Having spent years at FC Barcelona developing as a backup, he finally had his chance to shine, only for it to be snatched away due to one disciplinary issue. The frustration is evident, and sources close to the player suggest that he is considering his future at the club.

With ter Stegen expected to return for the 2025–26 season, Peña may find himself relegated to third-choice goalkeeper if he stays at FC Barcelona. At 25 years old, he needs regular playing time to progress in his career, which raises the possibility of a loan move or a permanent exit in the upcoming transfer window.

For now, the situation remains tense, with Peña and Flick reportedly having discussions about his role in the squad. Whether he fights for his spot or decides to seek opportunities elsewhere, the young goalkeeper’s next move will be crucial in shaping his career.

As FC Barcelona continues to navigate this goalkeeping conundrum, one thing is clear: competition for the starting spot is fiercer than ever, and Iñaki Peña has a big decision to make.
