The Captaincy Mistakes By Babar Azam against USA

Discover the critical  captaincy mistakes that Babar Azam committed that resulted in Pakistan’s unexpected loss to the United States in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Find out the inside scoop on Pakistan’s match-costing captaincy errors.

The cricket world was taken by surprise by Pakistan and USA’s compelling upset in the T20 World Cup 2024 match. A relatively unknown USA team upset Pakistan, a team with a strong history of producing renowned players and winning big championships. Many were surprised by the defeat, but a deeper look at the game shows that Pakistani skipper Babar Azam made multiple captaincy mistakes  that ultimately cost his team the victory.

Failure to Assess Conditions

During the post-match press conference, Babar Azam acknowledged that Pakistan did not make the most of the first six overs, which are critical since they set the tone for the remainder of the match.

“We didn’t capitalize in the first six overs,” Babar stated. “Back-to-back wickets always put you on the back foot, as a batter you need to step up and build partnerships.”

Pakistan was immediately put on the defensive due to their inability to adjust to the pitch’s characteristics and the opposition’s bowling approach.

The ball slowed down considerably after its initial bounce on the two-paced pitch at Dallas’ Grand Prairie Stadium.

The batsmen found it challenging to timing their shots as a result, and Pakistan’s top order found it difficult to play in the circumstances. Babar Azam’s poor start put pressure on the other batsmen as he needed 14 balls to score just 4 runs.

Ineffective Bowling Strategy

Former captain Misbah-ul-Haq attacked Pakistan’s bowling approach, saying they had no plan for even the opening two overs. “When it came to handling the fast bowlers, we didn’t know who would bowl after the first over,”

Misbah stated. “Naseem and Amir were walking in order to gain the advantage. Thus, we had no strategy for even two overs.” Due to their lack of planning, USA’s openers Aaron Jones and Harmeet Singh embarked on a 64-run partnership, which gave them the upper hand in the match.

Pakistan’s bowlers failed to capture wickets in the middle overs, and their overly cautious bowling plan was also criticized.

“We were lost because our spinners failed to take wickets during the middle overs,” acknowledged Babar Azam. The USA were able to establish a foundation for their chase due to the dearth of wickets in the middle overs, and they ultimately emerged victorious in an exciting Super Over.

Ineffective Spin Bowling

Throughout the game, Pakistan’s spin bowling was a huge disappointment as the spinners were unable to claim wickets in the middle overs.

Their spinners were ineffectual, as Babar Azam admitted, adding, “Our spinners did not take wickets in the middle overs, so these things cost us.” The USA batters punished the spinners for bowling an excessive number of sloppy deliveries.

Considering that Pakistan is known for generating elite spinners, the ineffectiveness of their spin bowling came as a big surprise. The USA batters punished the spinners for bowling an excessive number of sloppy deliveries.

Poor Fielding

Misbah-ul-Haq called Pakistan’s fielding “clueless,” saying that errors in the Super Over cost them the game. “In the Super Over, they were pinching extra runs via byes,” Misbah stated. “In terms of fitness, in terms of speed, in terms of smartness, they defeated us.”

Considering that the squad is known for having one of the top fielding units in the world, the fielding errors were a huge disappointment.

Absence of Purpose

Misbah-ul-Haq criticized Babar Azam for his lethargic batting in the first six overs, saying Pakistan’s batting strategy lacked purpose and urgency.

Death Overs That Don’t Work

Pakistan had a formidable bowling squad, but they were unable to use their final overs strategically, which led the United States to continue playing.

The Bitter Criticism of Misbah-ul-Haq

The former captain criticized the Pakistani team, labeling it as “clueless” and “timid”. He also chastised the team for lacking strategy and preparation.

Conclusion

Pakistan’s unexpected upset defeat by the United States in the T20 World Cup 2024 revealed a few of the team’s vulnerabilities.

Pakistan lost the match as a result of Babar Azam’s bad leadership decisions, which included his inability to judge the conditions, his poor bowling strategy, his ineffectual spin bowling, and his poor fielding.

The team’s poor on-field performance and lack of plan were huge letdowns, and they need to get better if they want to compete with the world’s top teams.

The defeat serves as a wake-up call for Pakistani cricket, and if they hope to overcome this setback, they will need to critically examine both their strategy and execution.

Pakistan has an opportunity to make amends and advance far in the T20 World Cup while it is still early in the competition. However, they have to learn from their errors.
