Thousands of fans have filled a stadium in the Indian capital, Delhi, as Virat Kohli makes his much-anticipated return to domestic cricket after more than 12 years.
Kohli’s Return to Domestic Cricket
After a challenging spell for both himself and the Indian team, Virat Kohli has returned to the domestic cricket arena, playing for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy match against Railways.
This comeback comes after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) mandated that contracted players participate in domestic matches following India’s disappointing 3-1 series loss to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Virat Kohli’s participation has generated significant buzz among fans and media alike, as many look forward to seeing if this exposure to domestic cricket will help him regain his form.
Performance Challenges and Recent Statistics
Virat Kohli’s recent record in Test cricket has raised concerns, particularly given his once-stellar average of 54.97 prior to 2020. Since then, his performance has faltered, with his overall average dropping to 30.72 and plummeting to just 22.47 over his last ten matches.
Such statistics highlight a player who, despite being one of the best in the modern era, is now battling inconsistency. His average of 23.2 since the start of 2024 is particularly alarming, placing him among the lowest averages for players with a minimum of ten innings.
This lean patch contrasts sharply with his history; Virat Kohli had previously established himself as one of the pillars of India’s batting lineup, often seen as the backbone of their middle order.

Fan Excitement and Game Atmosphere
Virat Kohli’s presence at the Arun Jaitley Stadium has been a major draw for fans, significantly elevating the excitement surrounding the Ranji Trophy match. The news broke that he would join the Delhi team for training, leading to a notable turnout of fans eager to catch a glimpse of their cricketing idol.
Reports indicated long queues outside the stadium, with many spectators waiting hours to secure their spot, as entry was free for the match. This phenomenon is rare for a domestic game, signaling the immense popularity Virat Kohli enjoys, even beyond international cricket.
Akash Kumar, a fan who waited for five hours, expressed his awe at the size of the crowd, emphasizing how extraordinary it was to see such enthusiasm for a domestic contest.
Impact on Team Dynamics
Virat Kohli’s return has not only sparked interest from the public but has also been a source of motivation for his teammates. Delhi’s captain, Ayush Badoni, shared that Virat Kohli’s involvement has brought a fresh sense of excitement and energy to the team.
His veteran presence is expected to boost the morale of younger players while encouraging a competitive spirit among the team members. Similarly, the captain of the Railways team, Pratham Singh, acknowledged the inspirational effect Virat Kohli has had on his players, stating that seeing such an accomplished player motivated them to elevate their performance.
The anticipation surrounding Kohli’s batting in the ongoing match remains high, as fans and players alike hope that this return will signal a revival of his prodigious talent.
