The captain of Australia has to hurry to get in shape for the highly anticipated Ashes series opener in Perth.
Pat Cummins, the captain of Australia, has said that he is ready to be “aggressive” in his recovery from a back injury so that he can lead his team into the Ashes opener on November 21 in Perth. The fast bowler is dealing with lumbar bone stress, which means he can’t play in the upcoming white-ball series against New Zealand and India.
Cummins Determined to Play Despite Setback
For the first time since scans verified the injury, Pat Cummins acknowledged in public that it would be heartbreaking to watch the Ashes from the sidelines. In Brisbane, he told reporters, “That would be devastating, so we’ll be doing everything we can to try to be right for that.”
The captain emphasized that he is willing to take chances because of the importance of the series. “I think you’re willing to take some chances and be a little bit aggressive to try and play as much Test [cricket] as you can because it doesn’t get much bigger.”
Backing Himself Without Match Practice
The selectors are still hopeful and George Bailey is certain that Pat Cummins will get better soon. That confidence was echoed by Cummins, who said he thinks he can get ready for the first Test without practicing in matches.
“I feel like I can probably get up to speed a bit quicker than when I was 18 or 19 at this stage of my career,” Pat Cummins stated. You most likely felt the need to play a few one-dayers or Shield games back then. I’m fairly certain that I’ll catch up even if I don’t have the opportunity to play a Shield game.

Managing the Injury
After Australia’s 3-0 thumping of the West Indies in July, when Pat Cummins bowled 60 overs in three Test matches, his problems became apparent. Even though they were initially at rest, follow-up scans verified that caution was necessary.
He clarified, “I’m obviously not bowling or doing too much at the moment, but it doesn’t feel too bad.” “You really just want to settle it down when you have bone injuries.”
He is still working out at the gym, but he is not going to run or bowl. He is still optimistic that he will fully recover in the 12 weeks leading up to the first Test.
Depth in Australia’s Pace Attack
Australia has trustworthy substitutes in case Cummins isn’t suitable. The most likely addition is Scott Boland, who just got a hat-trick against the West Indies. Sean Abbott, Brendan Doggett, Michael Neser, and Jhye Richardson are additional pace options.
Pat Cummins remarked, “We always talk about needing a lot of depth.” “There are about four or five guys who are good enough if needed, but we haven’t really had to go past the four guys.”
In the event that Pat Cummins is unable to lead, former captain Steven Smith is still available; he has held this position several times since 2021.
