New Zealand’s Champions Trophy campaign has been hit by another injury blow, with fast bowler Lockie Ferguson ruled out due to a foot injury. Kyle Jamieson has been named as his replacement in the squad.
The 33-year-old pacer was part of the Black Caps’ initial 15-man squad after featuring in the UAE-based International League T20. However, he did not play in the recent Tri-Nations series against Pakistan and South Africa.
Ferguson reported soreness in his right foot after New Zealand’s warm-up match against Afghanistan on Sunday. Medical assessments later confirmed that he would be unable to participate in the tournament.
Head coach Gary Stead expressed his disappointment at Ferguson’s absence.
“We’re disappointed for Lockie,” Stead said. “He is a key part of our bowling unit and brings valuable experience in major tournaments. We know how much he was looking forward to this event.
“We wish him a smooth recovery and hope to see him back on the field soon.”
Jamieson Returns to National Side After Year-Long Absence
Ferguson’s withdrawal opens the door for Kyle Jamieson to make his return to international cricket after more than a year.
The 30-year-old last represented New Zealand in February 2024 before suffering a back injury during a Test series against South Africa. Since then, he has worked his way back to full fitness and has impressed in domestic cricket.
“Kyle brings extra height, pace, and bounce, which will be useful in these conditions,” Stead added.
“He has been in great form in the Super Smash and Ford Trophy, showing good pace and energy. That’s exactly what we need from a fast bowler in a high-stakes tournament like this.
“We’re happy with his progress and believe he is ready to contribute if called upon.”
Ferguson is the second New Zealand bowler to be ruled out ahead of the tournament, with Ben Sears also withdrawing last week due to a hamstring injury. Sears was replaced in the squad by Jacob Duffy.

New Zealand’s Champions Trophy Schedule and Squad
New Zealand will kick off their Champions Trophy campaign against hosts Pakistan on February 19 in Karachi. They recently secured two victories over Pakistan in the Tri-Series held in the country.
Their second fixture will be against Bangladesh on February 24 in Rawalpindi, followed by their final league-stage match against India on March 2 in Dubai. To secure a place in the semifinals, the Black Caps will need to win at least two of their three group-stage matches.
