Mark Clattenburg Resigns from Forest Amidst FA Charges

Mark Clattenburg, a well-known former Premier League referee, has resigned from his newly created consultant role at Nottingham Forest. This news comes just hours after the FA charged the club for a controversial social media post following their defeat to Everton.

Short-lived Consultancy Creates Controversy

Mark Clattenburg was appointed in February to the unique position of refereeing consultant. His role involved analyzing officiating decisions and assisting the club in navigating the complexities of VAR (Video Assistant Referee). However, his tenure was marred by controversy.

Following a contentious 2-0 loss at Goodison Park, Nottingham Forest publicly criticized VAR official Stuart Attwell, suggesting bias due to his alleged support for Luton Town, a rival club. This accusation sparked significant backlash.

‘Unfairly Targeted’ – Mark Clattenburg

In a statement released by the club, Clattenburg expressed frustration over the “unmerited targeting” he faced from “certain participants and pundits” due to his consultancy role. He emphasized his good faith in performing the job and envisioned his experience aiding the club.

Clattenburg acknowledged the unintended friction caused by his role between Forest and other parties. He believes in the potential value such a position holds for the modern game but regrets the negative consequences it brought him personally.

FA Charges Forest and Personnel

Later on Friday, the FA took action against Nottingham Forest for their social media post concerning Attwell. The charges allege “improper conduct” by questioning the integrity of match officials and potentially bringing the game into disrepute.

Head coach Nuno Espirito Santo and player Neco Williams also received charges from the FA for their comments on the officiating. Interestingly, Clattenburg received a formal warning from the FA despite his resignation.

All parties have until May 9th to respond to the charges. Additionally, the Premier League is investigating the matter under its regulations, expressing strong disapproval of Forest’s social media conduct.
