Lando Norris claimed a sensational breakthrough victory at the Formula 1 Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix on Sunday, becoming the latest driver to join the winners’ circle. The McLaren driver benefitted from a late Safety Car to jump race leader Max Verstappen and hold off the Red Bull driver for a well-deserved win.

Early Drama and McLaren Fight

While Verstappen started strong and held the lead initially, the early stages saw plenty of action. Oscar Piastri, Norris’ teammate, surged from sixth to third in a thrilling fight at the start. Sergio Perez locked up and nearly collided with Verstappen, while Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz also battled for position.

The race took a dramatic turn with a Safety Car deployed on Lap 27 following an incident between Kevin Magnussen and Logan Sargeant. This played perfectly into Norris’ hands, as he pitted under the Safety Car with minimal time loss, emerging in the lead ahead of Verstappen who had already stopped.

Norris drove flawlessly in the closing stages, managing his lead and tyre wear to perfection. He crossed the line first to claim a long-awaited maiden victory, sparking emotional celebrations within the McLaren team. This win marks McLaren’s first Grand Prix victory since 2021.

Race Results and Next Up

Verstappen finished second, followed by Leclerc in third. Sainz, after he clashed with Piastri, managed to salvage fourth place ahead of Perez. A mix of Mercedes, AlphaTauri, Alpine, and Haas drivers filled the remaining points positions.

The next race on the F1 calendar is the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, taking place over May 17-19.
