Kiwis Run Riot: Pakistan Suffer Crushing Defeat in Pakistan vs New Zealand 1st  T20

Pakistan suffered a crushing nine-wicket loss in the opening T20 match of the series against New Zealand in Christchurch, struggling to defend a meager total of 91 runs. The visitors fielded three debutants Abdul Samad, Hassan Nawaz, and Muhammad Ali aiming to introduce fresh talent and embrace an aggressive, modern style of cricket. However, their high-risk approach lacked execution, as their attempt at attacking play translated into reckless swings rather than calculated stroke-making. Meanwhile, New Zealand’s bowlers appeared nearly unplayable, easily dismantling Pakistan’s lineup.

Early Wickets Doom Pakistan in Series Opener

The visitors got off to a dreadful start on Sunday, losing four wickets for just 11 runs within the first five overs as New Zealand’s pace attack made early inroads. Fast bowler Kyle Jamieson proved unplayable with the new ball, causing havoc in Pakistan’s top order. The innings never recovered, leading to Pakistan’s lowest-ever T20 total in New Zealand. In response, the hosts easily chased the target, reaching 92-1 in only 10.1 overs.

Jamieson and Duffy Tear Through Pakistan’s Batting Order

Jamieson was the standout performer, dismissing three of Pakistan’s top four batters and ending with remarkable figures of 3-8 in his allotted four overs, earning him the Player of the Match title.

Jacob Duffy was equally lethal, striking in the later stages of the innings to mop up the tail. He claimed career-best figures of 4-14 in 3.4 overs, ensuring Pakistan never built any momentum.

Shadab’s Struggles Continue in Woeful Return

Pakistan’s vice-captain, Shadab Khan, made his return to the squad after being dropped following the disappointing 2024 T20 World Cup campaign. His exclusion had been due to poor form, and despite being sent back to domestic cricket, he failed to make a significant impact there either. However, selectors backed him based on his vast experience and reports of him bowling long spells in domestic matches. Unfortunately for Shadab, his comeback turned into a nightmare as he struggled in both departments—scoring just 3 runs off 6 balls while batting and conceding 18 runs in his two overs without taking a wicket.

Lone Resistance from Khushdil and Salman

After being put into bat on a lively Hagley Oval surface, Pakistan’s batting lineup crumbled under pressure. Only three players managed to score in double digits.

Captain Salman Agha attempted to steady the innings, contributing 18 runs. His partnership of 46 runs with Khushdil Shah—who top-scored with 32 off 30 balls, including three sixes—was the only real highlight of Pakistan’s innings.

Jahandad Khan added 17 runs, but the innings folded with eight balls remaining. Pakistan’s previous lowest T20 total in New Zealand was 101, recorded during a 95-run defeat in Wellington in 2016.

Seifert and Allen Power Kiwis to Crushing Win

New Zealand’s chase was swift and efficient. Opener Tim Seifert set the tone with a blistering 44 off 29 balls, striking seven fours and a six.

Finn Allen (29*) and Tim Robinson (18*) comfortably completed the chase, wrapping up the match in just over 10 overs. It seemed as if the two teams were in completely different leagues, as New Zealand dominated Pakistan with ease. Their bowlers were nearly impossible to face, while their batters made light work of Pakistan’s bowling attack, dispatching deliveries all over the ground. The match looked far too easy for the Kiwis, who barely broke a sweat securing victory.

Series Moves to Dunedin

The second match of the five-game series is set to take place in Dunedin on Tuesday. Pakistan will need a major turnaround to stay competitive in the series. As Pakistan is trying fresh faces and attempting to adapt to modern-day T20 cricket, winning the series might not be the primary goal. Instead, Pakistan will hope that the young players who have been given opportunities can prove their worth and gain valuable experience for the future.
