Ireland prepares to face co-hosts USA in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 on June 14. The much-anticipated match of Ireland vs USA, set to take place at the Central Broward Park Stadium in Lauderhill, Florida, is under a significant threat from adverse weather conditions.
With rain forecasts casting a shadow over the game, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is considering relocating the match to ensure it proceeds smoothly.
High Stakes for USA in a Crucial Match
This fixture is critical for the USA team, as a victory would secure their place in the Super 8 round of the tournament. However they can still qualify if the match is washed out as they will get one point. Still the stakes are high, and the team, along with their fans, is hopeful for a clear day. However, the weather forecast paints a grim picture.
Weather Forecast: A Grim Outlook
The weather in Lauderhill, Florida, on June 14 is expected to be challenging, with a high of 29°C and a RealFeel of 33°C. Cloudy skies, a couple of showers, and a heavy thunderstorm are predicted, raising concerns about potential flooding. The area is under a Flood Watch from 12:00 AM Tuesday to 8:00 PM Friday, with precipitation levels expected to reach 24.8 mm.
The probability of precipitation stands at a staggering 99%, with a 59% chance of thunderstorms. Wind speeds are forecasted to be 17 km/h, with gusts up to 24 km/h, and cloud cover will be extensive at 99%.
Potential Impact on Other Matches
The inclement weather not only threatens the Ireland vs USA match but also casts a shadow over the upcoming Pakistan vs Ireland match on June 16, which has a 47% chance of rain. For Pakistan, which has already lost two out of three matches, the weather could play a important role in their qualification chances.
If Ireland wins against the USA, India defeats Canada, and Pakistan wins over Ireland, Pakistan could still qualify for the Super 8 based on their superior net run rate.

Calls for Action: Relocating Matches
Former Pakistan captain Azhar Ali has publicly urged the ICC to relocate matches from Florida due to the severe flood warnings. In a recent interview, Azhar expressed doubt about the feasibility of proceeding with the scheduled matches under the current weather conditions.
“Given the severe conditions in Florida, it seems unlikely that the matches will take place. The ICC must take action and shift the games to another venue,” Azhar stated. He also highlighted the logistical feasibility of holding multiple matches at a single venue, suggesting that teams have already contacted the ICC to request a venue change.
Criticism Over Venue Choices
Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has also voiced his concerns regarding the ICC’s decision-making. Latif criticized the poor playing conditions at New York’s Nassau County International Cricket Stadium and questioned the scheduling of matches in Florida during a period known for heavy rainfall.
In his posts on X (formerly Twitter), Latif remarked, “After eight matches in New York where the playing surfaces were subpar (with Canada’s 137-7 being the highest total and India’s 111-3 the highest run chase), we are now facing the possibility of three more washouts in Lauderhill, Florida. This is not a good look for the T20 World Cup, for which teams have trained and practiced for years!”
Latif further added, “How can the T20 World Cup organizers ignore the rain trends in Lauderhill during this period and schedule matches from June 14-16?”
