Fallout from T20 World Cup: The First Casualty For Pakistan Cricket

The aftermath of Pakistan cricket’s disappointing exit from the T20 World Cup has led to significant changes in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The first to face the consequences are Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq, both of whom have been removed from their roles as selectors.

Razzaq, who was recently appointed to the selection committee for both the men’s and women’s teams, will no longer serve as a selector for the women’s team either. Official announcements regarding their departure are expected later this week.

Wahab Riaz: From De Facto Head to Exit

Despite being removed as chief selector earlier this year, Wahab Riaz was considered the de facto leader of the selection committee, which did not have an official head. This perception led to significant frustration for Wahab, as he often faced the brunt of criticism for the committee’s decisions. His removal marks a rapid fall from grace for someone who was seen as closely aligned with PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi.

Wahab had previously served as a caretaker sports minister in Naqvi’s cabinet when Naqvi was the caretaker chief minister of Punjab. Following this, Wahab joined the PCB as the chief selector and later traveled with the Pakistan team to the T20 World Cup as the senior team manager, a role he is now likely to lose.

Abdul Razzaq: A Brief Tenure Comes to an End

Abdul Razzaq’s time on the selection committee was short-lived. Having only been appointed a few weeks ago, his removal comes as part of the broader restructuring following the World Cup. Razzaq’s role in the women’s team selection committee has also been terminated. This decision shows the PCB’s determination to make sweeping changes in response to the team’s recent failures.

A Reconstituted Selection Committee on the Horizon

The structure of the selection committee is expected to undergo significant changes. A chief selector is likely to be reappointed, and the size of the committee is anticipated to be reduced. This means that Wahab and Razzaq will probably not be replaced. The remaining committee members include the head coach and captain of the respective formats, Mohammad Yousuf, Asad Shafiq, and Bilal Afzal, a data analyst.

PCB’s History of Instability

The PCB has struggled with stability in its selection committee over the years. In the past four years, there have been six different chief selectors, including Haroon Rashid, Shahid Afridi, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Wasim, and Misbah-ul-Haq, with each serving only brief tenures. The recent changes highlight the ongoing challenges the PCB faces in maintaining a consistent and effective selection process.

Moving Forward

The decision to remove Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq is part of the PCB’s broader effort to address the issues that have plagued the national team. Chairman Mohsin Naqvi’s stance indicates a commitment to accountability and a willingness to make tough decisions to improve the team’s performance.

As the PCB moves forward with a reconstituted selection committee, it remains to be seen whether these changes will bring the desired stability and success to Pakistan cricket.
