Casemiro urged for retirement after a Nightmare Performance

Manchester United’s woes deepened on Monday night after a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace. While the entire team deserves criticism, it was midfielder Casemiro who came under particular scrutiny, with his performance prompting calls for him to consider retirement.

A Disastrous Night for Casemiro

Casemiro, a decorated veteran with multiple Champions League titles, endured a night to forget against Palace. He was directly at fault for three of the Eagles’ goals and compounded his misery by being easily dispossessed in the build-up to the fourth. This performance has led many to question whether the 31-year-old is still at the top level.

Carragher’s Assessment of Casemiro

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher was particularly scathing in his assessment of Casemiro. Appearing on Sky Sports, Carragher urged the midfielder to consider hanging up his boots at the highest level. “Three games left at a top level,” Carragher advised, suggesting a move to a less competitive league like MLS or Saudi Arabia might be a better fit for Casemiro at this stage of his career.

Carragher believes Casemiro, “one of the greats of the modern time,” needs to prioritize his legacy. “Leave the football before the football leaves you,” Carragher said, quoting a mantra he followed during his playing career

A Steller Career Overshadowed?

Casemiro joined United in 2022 for a hefty £70 million fee and still has two years remaining on his contract, reportedly making him the club’s highest earner. Carragher, however, believes financial gain shouldn’t be the deciding factor. “He’s made a right few quid, good luck to him,” acknowledged the former defender, suggesting United could buy out the remaining years on his contract.

“He is too good to be putting in a performance like that and being laughed at by Crystal Palace,” Carragher emphasized.

United’s Record-Breaking Season of Disappointment

The defeat to Palace marked a new low for Manchester United. It was their 13th loss of the Premier League season, the most they’ve ever suffered in a single campaign. This adds to a season of misery that also includes their heaviest defeat of the season and a first-ever double defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace.

Future for the Red Devils

Manchester United have a short turnaround before their next match, a crucial clash against title-chasing Arsenal next Sunday. With three games remaining, they have a chance to salvage some pride from a disastrous season. Currently sitting in eighth place, they are on course for their worst-ever Premier League finish, surpassing the seventh-place finish of the 2013-14 season.
