The track today known as the Red Bull Ring was created over the winter of 1995- 96, when Herman Tilke was tasked with turning the original Österreichring into a shorter, more modern track.
The first-ever F1 race at Österreichring was held in 1970, and after its renovation in 1996-97, F1 returned in 1997 when it was called A1 Ring. On May 15 2011, it was named the Red Bull Ring, the first ever F1 race held after the renaming was held on June 22, 2014, when the sport returned to Austria after a 11-year hiatus.
The first half of the track rewards power as the cars speed along three straights, after which the drivers work their way downhill as the cars move more freely and accelerate through the quick corners.

Warm and dry conditions are expected throughout the weekend, with the temperature reaching up to 31.5°C on Sunday. Teams would also have to take into account the high track temperature while planning for the Weekend.
Can Hamilton continue the momentum in the 2026 Austrian GP?
Lewis Hamilton secured his maiden victory with Ferrari at Barcelona, cementing his second place in the World Drivers’ Championship (WDC). This came after his consecutive podium finishes. Ferrari was having a strong start at the start of the season, but they were unable to retain the momentum.
After the recent upgrades, the Italian outfit started yielding results, more particularly for Hamilton. Now, will Scuderia be able to continue the momentum and put Silver Arrows under pressure?
Can Mercedes and Antonelli bounce back after the Barcelona Setback
After the season opener, which was won by George Russell, Kimi Antonelli enjoyed a comfortable run, winning five races in a row, and was cruising towards another win when bad luck struck for the Italian as he faced a reliability issue, ending his race without scoring a point.
He still has a 41-point buffer over second-place Hamilton. Now the track suits Mercedes, they will come all cylinders firing at Antonelli, and can recover from his Barcelona setback.
Is there a chance for McLaren’s comeback in Austria?
McLaren has endured a difficult campaign so far, with reliability issues repeatedly undermining its performances.
Although Lando Norris secured a podium finish last time out, Ferrari’s recent improvements have made it increasingly difficult for McLaren to establish itself as Mercedes’ closest challenger.
Austria could provide an opportunity for the team to turn its season around. The characteristics of the Red Bull Ring have traditionally suited McLaren, and a strong result this weekend could mark the beginning of its recovery.
