The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced they will be inviting applications for the role of new India men’s head coach, ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup. This move comes in contrast to last year’s appointment of Rahul Dravid, where applications were only sought after his initial tenure had ended.
Dravid Can Re-Apply for the new India Men’s Head Coach Position
Current head coach Rahul Dravid’s contract will expire after the T20 World Cup in June. BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed that Dravid can also extend his tenure by re-applying for the position alongside other candidates.

Three-Year Contract for the New India Men’s Head Coach and Focus on All Formats
The BCCI seeks a long-term commitment from the new India Men’s head coach, offering a three-year contract that extends until the 2027 ODI World Cup. Shah also dismissed the possibility of splitting the coaching role for different formats, emphasizing the presence of all-format players in the team. The final decision on the head coach, however, will rest with the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC).
New National Selector
The BCCI is also in the process of finalizing a new national selector alongside the new India men’s head coach. Interviews for this position have already begun, with the CAC expected to announce the chosen candidate within a week. This new member is likely to replace Salil Ankola and come from the North Zone.
T20 World Cup: Staggered Departures for Players
The Indian team’s departure for the T20 World Cup will be divided into two batches. Players whose teams are eliminated from the IPL playoffs will leave on May 24th with the coaching staff. The remaining players will depart after the IPL final on May 26th.
BCCI Prioritizes IPL Practice Over Rest
Shah rejected the idea of resting players whose teams are out of playoff contention in the remaining IPL matches. He emphasized the importance of the IPL in honing T20 skills, citing the examples of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma’s recent performances.
