Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has unveiled the national squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, set to commence on February 19 in Pakistan. This marks a historic milestone as Afghanistan qualifies for the Champions Trophy for the very first time, becoming the eighth team to earn a spot in the prestigious tournament.
Afghanistan’s qualification is the result of consistent and outstanding performances in ODIs, particularly during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. In that tournament, Afghanistan stunned the cricketing world with emphatic victories over England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, defeating these strong sides with commanding margins. They also came tantalizingly close to defeating Australia, showcasing their ability to challenge top-tier teams.
This unprecedented success has ignited pride and excitement among Afghan fans, further solidifying Afghanistan’s place as a formidable force in international cricket. Their progress isn’t limited to ODIs; Afghanistan’s T20 growth has also been exceptional. The team reached the semifinals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, defeating powerhouse teams like Australia and New Zealand along the way.

Strategic Edge

“AfghanAtalan have performed exceptionally well in the past two ICC events, the CWC23 and the ICC World T20 2024. Their impressive performances in these two events and their ODI series victories last year will undoubtedly boost their morale and help them deliver an even better campaign this time,” remarked ACB Chairman Mirwais Ashraf.
With a well-rounded squad and the tactical leadership of captain Hashmatullah Shahidi, Afghanistan is poised to make a lasting impression on its Champions Trophy debut. All eyes will be on the Afghan Atalan as they look to challenge the best and carve their place among cricket’s elite.
