Argentina’s Horror Show: Spain Crush Messi’s Dream As Torres Breaks Hearts In Extra Time

Spain Crush Messi

Post-Match Analysis

Overview

There’s no other way to say it, Argentina were poor in the final and Spain made them pay for it. Argentina had a bright start and even threatened through Messi inside the first five minutes, but once that early flurry died down, this didn’t even look like a World Cup final anymore, it looked like Spain training against a team that couldn’t get out of its own half. Argentina barely had a kick after that, extra time arrived, and things somehow got worse from there. Enzo Fernandez saw red deep into stoppage time, Argentina were down to ten men, and Ferran Torres punished them within seconds of the restart in extra time. Messi, in what was probably his last World Cup game, barely had a sniff all night. This wasn’t a final that went down to the wire, it was Argentina falling apart in front of the whole world.

First Half

Argentina actually had their moments early on, even if it didn’t feel that way by the end of the night. Inside the first five minutes Yamal was played through twice in the same move, but Martinez kept both efforts out, and moments later it was Messi sprinting clear on the other end with only Unai Simon to beat, only for the keeper to get there first and smother it. After that early flurry, the game settled into exactly the kind of contest Argentina wanted, scrappy, physical, and short on real quality. Spain had the ball for long spells but couldn’t turn it into much, Oyarzabal’s effort in the 39th minute was comfortable for Martinez, and Cucurella dragged one just wide right before the break. Argentina didn’t manage a single shot in the entire half, but they’d done their job, the game was still goalless at the interval and the plan was working.

Fernandez Sees Red (90+3′)

You could feel the frustration building all night, and it finally boiled over right at the death. Enzo Fernandez picked up his second yellow deep into stoppage time and Scaloni’s night went from bad to worse. Argentina had already been chasing shadows for most of the game, and now they had to somehow find a way through extra time with ten men. Nobody watching thought this was going to end well for them, and it didn’t.

Torres Ends It (106′)

Barely a minute into the second half of extra time, Ferran Torres did what Argentina had been dreading the whole night. He thumped the ball home from close range and just like that, the game and the tournament were as good as over. Emiliano Martinez had somehow kept Argentina in this final with save after save, but even he couldn’t do anything about this one. Ten men, exhausted, and now a goal down, Argentina simply had nothing left to give.

Messi’s Nightmare Final

This was supposed to be one last night for Messi to shine, and instead it turned into a horror show. He barely got the ball in dangerous areas the whole game, and Spain made sure of that. His best moment came early on when Julian Alvarez sent him through with only the keeper to beat, but Unai Simon got there first and denied him. After that, Messi just faded into the game, and Argentina faded along with him. Watching one of the greatest players ever end his World Cup story like this was tough, even for people who don’t support Argentina.

Verdict

Argentina will have a lot of soul-searching to do after this one. The champions barely managed a couple of shots all game and never really looked like scoring. At the back they held on for a long time thanks to Martinez, but that kind of pressure was always going to break eventually. Spain, on the other hand, just kept doing what they’ve done all tournament, patient in possession, relentless without the ball, and ruthless when the chance finally came. This wasn’t a final that Argentina lost by bad luck. It was a team that got taken apart.

My Take

Watching this game, it honestly felt like Argentina never really turned up for the biggest match of their lives. Spain looked composed from the first whistle, like they already knew how the night would end, and Argentina looked like a team playing with the weight of the world on their shoulders. Messi tried, but one man chasing shadows can only do so much. Rodri controlled the middle of the park all night without breaking a sweat, and Yamal, so calm for someone his age, kept popping up wherever Argentina were weakest. For Argentina, this is going to sting for a long time. Defending a World Cup was always going to be hard, but nobody expected it to end in a performance like this.
