Explainer: What are Pink Test Matches?

India and Australia are set for a final face-off in the Border Gavaskar Trophy at Sydney Cricket Ground. India will likely equalize the series by winning the game and retaining the BGT. On the other side, Australia will go all guns blazing to win this match and series. Last Wednesday it was announced that New Year’s Test at SCG will be a Pink test. 

What is the Pink Test and the History Behind It?

Pink Day Test is played to spread awareness about breast cancer and aims to gain funding and donations to help those dealing with this.  It was started to honor late Jane McGrath the wife of veteran Australian cricketer Glenn McGrath who tragically passed away due to breast cancer in 2008. At the time Glenn McGrath was an active cricketer.  McGrath Foundation was founded in 2005 to help breast cancer patients. Every year since 2009 New Year test is a Pink Test.

What Makes Pink Test Special?

The entire stadium including the stands, seats, and stumps is colored pink. Moreover, the Australian player’s jerseys and caps are changed for the pink test. Unlike traditional Baggy green Kangaroos wear pink caps. Player names, numbers, and sponsor logos are in the pink color. 

During the match throughout the 5 days charity events take place on the sidelines. The third day of the match is called  “Jane McGrath Day”. It is the pinnacle of awareness campaigns. Fans also participate in this by wearing a pink version of the Australian jersey.

Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hocely expressed his delight about the partnership with McGrath Foundation he said “The Pink Test has always been a very special moment in the cricket calendar. We’re thrilled to support Glenn on this momentous occasion and continue our partnership with the McGrath Foundation to help them take their care even further.” 

Australian captain Pat Cummins who lost his mother due to this illness was also vocal about this he says this was the most difficult period of his life. It changed his perspective on his priorities
