Circuit Stats & History
The greatest traditions and the modernity of Spa-Francorchamps will always make a charm in the eyes of fans and participants of the World Championship. It is one of seven circuits to have been a part of the first championship grid in 1950 and has been home to the Belgian Grand Prix since 1985, although barely two.
The challenge of this circuit, located in the forests and hills of the Ardennes is the elevation changes, opportunities to overtake, and virtually unpredictable weather conditions. It includes such a classic as the Eau Rouge turn that many years ago was considered one of the most difficult in the F1.
- Laps: 44 (7 km each, totaling 308 km)
- Lap Record: 1:46.286 (Valtteri Bottas, 2018)
- Most Wins: Michael Schumacher (6), Ayrton Senna (5), Lewis Hamilton (4), Max Verstappen (3), Daniel Ricciardo (1), Charles Leclerc (1)
- Most Poles: Lewis Hamilton (6), Michael Schumacher (1), Max Verstappen (1), Charles Leclerc (2), Carlos Sainz (1)
What Happened Last Year?
Verstappen right after he had emerged as the winner of the sprint race on Saturday graced the starting line from the sixth slot having applied for a new gearbox. It was not important – Verstappen won ahead of his teammate Sergio Perez by 22 seconds. In Ferrari, Leclerc who started the race at pole position could only manage to finish at the third position.
Who’s Going to Win?
This track suits Red Bull more than the Hungaroring, but Verstappen might face a 10-place grid drop if the team decides to change his engine. This could shift the advantage to Mercedes, who are likely to thrive. McLaren’s performance across all circuits recently makes it a wide-open fight for the win.
