Gautam Gambhir has been announced as India’s new head coach, taking over from Rahul Dravid, who concluded his tenure on a high note by leading India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup. The announcement was made by BCCI secretary Jay Shah on X (formerly Twitter).
First Challenge: Sri Lanka Tour
Gambhir’s first assignment will be the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka later this month, which includes three ODIs and three T20Is. This will be his first opportunity to guide the Indian team under his leadership and begin his tenure on a strong note.
Gambhir’s Emotional Return
Expressing his pride and commitment, Gambhir shared on X, “India is my identity and serving my country has been the greatest privilege of my life. I’m honoured to be back, albeit wearing a different hat. But my goal is the same as it has always been, to make every Indian proud. The men in blue shoulder the dreams of 1.4 billion Indians and I will do everything in my power to make these dreams come true!”
End of an Era for Dravid’s Team
With Gambhir’s appointment, the assistant coaches who worked alongside Dravid—Vikram Rathour (batting), Paras Mhambrey (bowling), and T Dilip (fielding)—will also conclude their tenures. The BCCI expressed gratitude for their contributions and wished them well for the future.
A Wave of Success and Transition
Gambhir takes over a team that has enjoyed tremendous success. India reached the finals of both the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup last year before becoming T20 World Champions. However, the team is also in a transitional phase, with stars like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja retiring from T20Is, and other senior players like R Ashwin and Mohammed Shami possibly nearing the end of their careers in other formats.

Appointment Process and Gambhir’s Coaching Journey
The BCCI had advertised the head coach position, setting a deadline of May 27 for applications. Gambhir emerged as the leading candidate following discussions during IPL 2024, where he was instrumental in Kolkata Knight Riders’ title run as a mentor. Prior to this, he had served as a mentor for the Lucknow Super Giants, guiding them to the playoffs in IPL 2022 and 2023.
Gambhir’s Vision and Commitment
Gambhir had previously expressed his desire to coach the Indian team during an event in Abu Dhabi. “There is no bigger honour than coaching your national team,” he said, emphasizing his commitment to making every Indian proud and his belief that collective support and fearlessness are key to winning.
Conclusion: A New Chapter for Indian Cricket
Gautam Gambhir’s appointment marks a new chapter for Indian cricket. With his experience and passion, he aims to build on the team’s recent successes and navigate through its transitional phase.
