History was created on Sunday as Naila Kiani, an exceptional Pakistani mountaineer successfully summited Makalu, the fifth-largest mountain in the world, located in Nepal.
The Complete Ascent by Naila Kiani
On Sunday around 9:35 am local time in Nepal (8:50 am Pakistan time), after a tricky climb through the night, Naila accomplished another remarkable milestone by successfully ascending the world’s fifth largest peak, Mount Makalu. The Alpine Club of Pakistan, Pakistan’s mountaineering authority, proudly announced Naila as the first Pakistani woman to achieve this difficult accomplishment on Makalu.
Mount Makalu is the fifth-highest mountain in the world, 8,485 meters high, located in the Mahalangur Himalayas southwest of Mount Everest. Kiani’s recent achievement makes her the first and only Pakistani woman to summit eleven peaks above 8,000 meters. She has conquered various peaks, including Nanga Parbat (8,215 meters), Mount Everest (8,849 meters), and K2 (8,611 meters). Gaherbrum I (8,068 meters), Gasherbrum II (8,035 meters) and more.

Achievements by Naila Kiani
Naila Kiani has numerous mountaineering achievements. In April 2023, she was titled the first Pakistani woman to ascend Annapurna, the world’s 10th highest peak (8,091 meters), in Nepal. The following month, Mount Everest was conquered by her, the highest peak in the world, making her the second Pakistani woman to do so.
In July, Nanga Parbat (8,125 meters), the world’s 9th largest peak was conquered by Naila Kiani & Samina Baig becoming the first woman to do so. Furthermore, in July, Kiani ascended Broad Peak (8,051 meters), the 12th highest mountain in the world, making her the first Pakistani woman. Later that year, Kiani and Sirbaz Khan became the first Pakistani duo to conquer Cho Oyum the world’s sixth-highest peak at (8,201 meters) in China. In addition to all her mountaineering achievements, she was awarded the ‘Sitara-e-Imtiaz’, Pakistan’s third-largest Civilian honour for summiting Mount Everest.
Kiani’s Impact
Kiana was the first Pakistani woman to achieve this wonderful accomplishment. Her journey depicts the power of passion & empowerment of women. Over time, she’s broken barriers & continues to do so, paving the way for other women in Pakistan and globally to chase their dreams. Her journey has & will inspire generations. It is and will be a reminder that the impossible is possible with perseverance.
